Hmm well this was interesting...

I did some encased multicolour beads the other day - some of them struck to purple, some stayed greeny.  Put them in the kiln yesterday and was surprised that in the kiln some of the purple bits struck to.... RED!    ???  I'm not sure if this is a good thing or means I've done something to them that they didn't like, but here's a piccy so you can see what I mean:

I guess I can claim that they truly ARE multicolour anyway!

I had my first play with it yesterday.
As for tickling the fairy's............ i think it is going to need alot more then this! :(
Its just not fair, i have had a rubbish week and was looking forward to getting into my garage (away from sick children and sick OH) and when i do get in there, nothing works. :'( except bird poo.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, whisky in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

I'm also having trouble with this glass, mine also stay the soft moss colour and I'm soooooo jealous of some of the colours that you guys get.

Can I ask what type of flame you are reheating the glass in to get the purples / blues? (gas up / gas down down / tip of flame etc) and what temperature you have your kiln set on.

I've tried the swearing thing, the praying thing and before my DH has me sectioned, I thought I'd ask you guys for your advice.

Also why oh why do colds always start over the weekends when you have plans to make beads? I can't stop sneezing so I don't think I'll be making anything today  ::)

Ok, I will tell you what I do... I am on a Hothead... so I'm in a reducing flame automatically.

I make the bead, get it really hot (well as hot as you can on a HH!), then straight away roll the bead on a graphite marver.  I keep it there quite a long time until all the glow has totally gone.  At this point the glass almost looks a bit transparent.

I then bring the bead up gradually towards the underside of the flame, very slowly, rotating all the time.  I don't actually put it back in the flame, but kind of hold it a couple of centimeters under the flame, and watch the purples appear....

I have had fabulous purples and blues this way - only got the weird red thing going on when I encased it!

I had a go with multi the other day and was fairly pleased i got something other than the bleurgh green colour, athough they werent the fabulous deep blues i have seen from some people, kind of pale plue with edges of pale purple, but what i did was heat it really runny hot, shape it (i just did rounds to test), let it really cool til there was no glow left and then strike quickly back in the very top of the flame, i kept doing this a couple of times as i hoped the colour i got from the first strike would get dark, but it didnt really, or not that i could notice! I did try cooling on a stainless steel marver on one but i found i got horrible red patches when i reheated afterward  ???
I got some more yesterday and a rod of dark so i'll give it another go today and see what happens! I'll say my prayers and tickle the kiln (slow cooker) fairies first  ;)

helbels

Yep, the transparent bit shows you have got it right :)

I can get it transparent, no problem, looks rather nice actually. Then it just does nothing but go back to opaque green afterwards when I introduce it back to the flame. Done all sorts to it. Fed up.
Going to try the dark tomorrow.

Mine went transparent today, which it didnt do last time so im intrigued to see if the colour is any different to the last ones when i get them out, i also tried dark, and i think im going to like it better, it did go a lot darker with minimal effort, it did however just look like a dark blue when i put it in so waiting to see what thats like when it comes out too!

Weeeell, I can confirm that my current batch isn't like the first one.....in a slight panic, because what went in the kiln certainly didn't look like a Dreamer rose.....the last batch didn't really kiln strike for me - what went in came out - I'll see what it looks like tomorrow  ???

I think this is definately a batch problem, the MC I got from martin looks different from the batch I got from Sean. Martins batch is opaque rods with hoops of colours as you look down them and Seans seem to be trans. with and outer beige colour.
Just made 2 test beads, one from each batch with VERY different results, the opaque rod bead has gone very deep violet with hi lights of demin, turquoise and plum, the trans rod went icky green. I worked them exactly the same.

SilverGems89

I think you may be on to something there Kay because the batch i got from Martin on saturday is kinda trans in the middle with an outer layer of the beige colour like you described, and i also have a rod from Jo that im assuming is from the batch she got from sean which is opaque all the way through with the internal coloured rings! But i've had pretty much the same results from both, which is kind of patchy lilac and light blue (nowhere near as pretty as what i have seen some people get  :()
Also the dark i tried just went dark blue, no purple or anything...thinking i may have to try pressing both of them to get the nicer results  :-\

hollergrafik

sounds like an older batch that was good then because I got the opaque from Martin and trans from Sean LOL

Reichenbach say that the colour difference comes from different parts of the pull - the glass is the same throughout.

Lush!

Well I got some Multicolour Dark and my first play with it easily produced gorgeous purple - that's the three beads at the back of the photo.

Last night I tried again, on the mandrel are Dark, Light, Dark, Light.  The first bead on the left struck easily, the other dark was much trickier and the two made with Multi Light wouldn't do anything but green.  Just before giving up I reduced them and I thought beads 2, 3 and 4 had changed nicely but that effect seems to have worn off in the kiln.
