When glass is melted to form beads and other shapes various gases and fumes are released. Using other things in lampworking to embellish your work can also lead to fumes, gases and dust. All of these are considered to be detrimental to health and for this reason ventilation has to be a major consideration.

There is much discussion on FHF about ventilation and other forums as well which are worth reading. This link also takes you to a book recommendation which has some information on ventilation.

Some substances that can be used will also require you to wear a mask. These include silver foil/leaf and enamels.
