Oiling cores?

As in, is anybody doing it? Is there a trick to it? I've tried (letting oil run though it, essentially), but it doesn't seem to make that much difference. I've been usng olive &vegetable oil so far, or do I need to get oil pressed out of midnight-blooming roses by the hands of blind, naked buddhist  (bead-hist?) monks from the outskirts of a small village near Ulaan-Baatar - and if so, is it on special offier anywhere?

I've never heard of doing this! How exciting, what does it do?! Is it particularly good for goddesses?

What about clear nail varnish?

Have you tried that, Julie? Sounds interesting - that would mean my etched beads would get two nail varnish treatments!

Emma, the idea is you see less of the channel the hole makes through beads, particularly clear, light colours, I've been meaning to get to grips with it for ages....

I'm sure Ray Skene wrote something about this a while ago, and I think that's where I read the nail varnish tip - but no, I haven't tried it (have tried the part-etching thingy though, cool!)

Aah, it all makes sense!  I have some bead polish which says it cleans holes. I've never got to grips with it, wonder if it does anything?

For somebody who never wears nail varnish, I go through quite a bit......okay, it's on my shopping list......how on earth do you varnish inside a 1.6mm, up to 3" long hole......I guess I could pull thread through the varnish then through the bead.....*scuttles off to ponder*

I don't wear nail varnish either, though our house is full of various shades of lurid pink, purple and glitter! Not sure they'd work for bead cores though. Actually, this bead cleaner suggests using a pipe cleaner too. Maybe that'd work for oil too?

Being a non-lampworker I have no idea what this thread is about!!  Just thought I'd mention though in case it's relevant - I use pipe cleaners for my metal clay work and I buy proper pipe cleaners, not the ones that you can get in crafty shops.  The proper ones have the metal bits in them and so don't disintergrate (sp??).  I use mine to thread through my metal beads when they're going into the tumbler to stop the shot getting trapped inside the beads - the cheapy ones just ended up as mush in the bottom of my tumbler!!  Don't know how they'd react to nail varnish!

Thanks Rebecca, I'll make sure I buy proper pipe cleaners......if I can find them. Both craft shops and smokers' paraphernalia are in short supply in Sheffield city centre, but I'm sure I'll find some if I search hard enough

I get mine at the cigarette counter at the supermarket - I have to ask for them though, they don't have them out on the shelf

I got some on Ebay - they do need to be the proper pipe cleaning pipe cleaners, cos they're abrasive.
