Red Dots

I'm having a bit of a 'mare.

I am trying to put red dots on Lapis, Freman and Sherwood. So far I have tried light red
(591428), medium Red (591432), Purple red (591438) and Rech's straberry. All of these have gone slightly translucent, become muddy red and not given the crisp definition I was looking for.

Do any of you know of a red that you know won't loose it's zing?

I'd really appreciate and help

I use a lot of 436 in my murrini and it seems to keep its colour.
CIM Sangre is usually pretty good too.
I think getting red dots on top of a dark colour like Lapis is a bit of a challenge!

Could you put a dot of white on first, then cover it?

I was going to say that, but then I put some small red dots on ivory lately and they're a bit translucenty orange brown too.
so 436 is dark red...hmm sure I tried that one too

still maybe the white will work. maybe you just need bigger dots so its got more red physically? that won't work for my design though

I was kinda hoping not to go down the two dot route, my dot placement can be a bit hit an miss and I don't want a halo (yes fussy) I have made a load of other beads to go with these ones and none of them have halos and potentially it would mean starting again...

Kaz, do you not think the Sangre would be too translucent?

I am beginning to agree that it is a bloomin challenge!!

What about encasing in clear or putting a dot of clear first? Might be a bit more forgiving of wobbly dot placement than the white...

I have rhubarb here and also lauscha red - if you don't have them I could send you enough for you to get a bit dotty with?

I have a couple of sticks of Lauscha, I confess it's in a jar off to one side,I shall try that one first this evening.

I'm trying to make the beads feel almost remedial and encasing them kinda makes them feel a bit more grown up if you see what I mean.

This is the one that I made for Mum. I want to make one (much longer) for my Aunt. I want it to have the same character but be slightly different. So I thought mixing it up a bit with the dot colours would be a good way to do it.

Have you thought about using a variety of different dot colours, you could keep them all on the warm side from yellows through to red and then you might get a better contrast on the darker beads by using lighter colours?

these are the ones that I'm happy with so far

These are the test beads I have done

this was the yellow dots. The ones on the left are the rejects, then the ones on the left are the ones that I have gone with. Do you see what I mean about the crispness of the yellow on the right.

Then these are the reds...

clockwise from top left, light red, purple red, medium red and strawberry. That horrible halo effect on the lapis I think is the lapis reacting and not the medium red as it has done the same with the yellow ochre.

I am yet to decide on the yellow that I want to add into this mix. The yellow ochre is a bit flat with some of the other colours.

Do you have any Marigold? It's a fab yellow, and would work well with these colour combos.
