burnt clear glass?

So, my propane was finishing, still trying to get the glass to melt on a hothead and using clear till the tank was empty.Next day, new tank, picked up clear glass I had been using the day before and its all smokey brown at the end. Cut off the end that was discoloured, made beads, and today find they are all smokey brown. Baffled.
Wondering if I can etch them to look better, will they still be a horrible colour.

Loosing nothing etching them and they may turn out lovely! Not sure why they should be smokey as never used a hothead, sounds like to much propane.

Sure it was the propane but it surprised me that affected most of a rod of glass, not just the bead.

Which clear was it?

CiM clear does it to me if I torch in my normal position, it likes to be that little bit cooler but the last lot I did that when smokey after they had been in the kiln they came out clear.

Only time it's happened with effetre is when I accidentally dropped some silver leaf into the torch heas, you may need to give your torch a nice little clean.

Hmm interesting about cim clear, I have this too, this was vetro clear, I've been using some up that I have and its not been scummy or anything quite good as vetro can sometimes be and it hadn't happened before. I think the glass rod got sooty and I didn't notice till they came out of the kiln. I will try a whole new rod tonight and see what happens. Torch was cleaned recently, I clean it regularly as it clogs up easily, but its worth doing it again too isn't it. There were about 5 beads.

I'm away to etch them now.

Have you done any reducing on your torch recently? I find if I'm reducing lots then it has a tendency to go sooty quite quickly. Also, I once changed from the tin foil collar to using a recently cleaned oven glove, but it clearly wasn't clean all the way through as I got soot really quickly and lots more of it. I'm back with the tin foil now

Hmm, not been reducing no, think I was trying to squeeze the last out of the tank of gas though and that was my undoing !
Ahem, I use a sock for reducing, probably not very safe really. It's supposed to be a fill in till I get a kevlar glove.

Anyways....the etching worked, whoop, it was 6 beads so I'm really pleased. Must be the sootiness was on the surface then maybe?
