Hi everyone,

I was just curious as to whether or not any of you leave your kiln on overnight in your house while you sleep or do you watch it like a hawk?

I've done about 5 or 6 firings now and I've always started the kiln going at midday latest so that it's finished by late evening.  Today though I turned it on at about 5pm.

I've got a Paragon SC2 kiln with one shelf of jewellery items in.

What do you do?

Thanks

Hi,
I have an SC3, I leave it running when I go to bed and turn it off in the morning.
When it's finished it goes to IDLE.

I leave it running on a annealing cycle all the time.  On thing though, the finishing alarm is quite loud so expect to be woken up by it.

(I generally go to back to sleep with a big smile on my face  ::))

I have a neighbour that doesn't like the idea of it being on when I am out, so I told him I don't do that  (well, I wasn't at the time  ;))

i leave mine on overnight (beadcube) if its not done before i go to bed ...so if i have had a good day it stays on  ;)

I have an SC2 which stays on overnight for a 10+hour firing schedule for BronzClay. Evening and long beady sessions anneal overnight too :)

Phew, thank you so much everyone.  I was beginning to think I had a long night ahead of me.

I've never actually managed to get it to finish without an error.  Usually that it's been firing for too long over schedule or that room temperature is warmer than my finish temperature so I've never actually heard the end of firing alarm :S

I have an sc2.. I leave it on overnight, mostly as I'm beading between 9 and 12pm and they go straight in... ready in the morning  ;D

I leave mine on overnight if necessary. I think at annealing temps i don't have a problem but I think if I was fusing at the higher temps then I would prob want to be awake as it peaked at 800andwhatever it goes to. But no, they are insulated and building materials are fairly resilient if there is no naked flame!

I leave my Sc2 overnight (last bead goes in at about 11pm) in my shed. Always wake up and rush to the window to check the shed is still there in the morning!! I have the electrics on a circuit breaker though, so even if the kiln goes wrong, the electricity would trip.

I leave my beadcube on  as I mostly finish torching late at night too. Once though  I had the thermo thingy bit at the back had come loose and I hadn't noticed  it was bright red and extremely hot compared to what it usually was and then it started beeping and  . Luckily I was  still up so now when I go to bed I check its in at the back ok and that everything else is off and that its safe.

Thanks to everyone.

I left it on but at that stage it had cooled to about 400*C so I wasn't too bothered.  Unfortunately I woke to a bang at 2.30am but I think it was my subconscience playing tricks on me as there was nothing wrong.

It woke me up the first few times.  Then the first morning that it didn't wake me up I went rushing through, all was fine!

Yes, although now the last bead goes in at 4pm so I can start clearing up and preparing tea for when mini-me's get home from school at 4.30pm, but it runs through the evening (and as I'm usually in bed around 9pm it's switched off/re-set in the morning).  If we're having a thunder and lightning storm I do get up and switch the kiln off (I worry about power surges wrecking the kiln).  When I first started lampworking, when the girls were baby and toddler, I could only work in the evening so the kiln was on overnight.

I leave it on overnight. Most of the time I have to, since my glass fusing schedules take up to 9 hours to finish. I can even leave it on during the day while I leave the house for errands.

Yup, I leave mine on overnight, sometimes don't even put it on til 10pm, so its at full fuse top temperatures in the middle of the night.  I also go out all day too with it on.
