I've been making some black bead bases with white dots, but seem to get a strange effect on them. The white webbed around the edges when I melted them in and when I took them out of the kiln, the webbed bit had turned silver - I like the effect, but I was really wanting a clean white on black effect instead!  I think my flame was a normal one.

The glass I used was CiM hades with Effetre white followed by Effetre black with Effetre white when I noticed the webbing effect around the edges of the white, but they all came out the same.

Any suggestions as to how to get plain ol' white on black?

Hades has done the webbing for me too, so I think it's sort of same kind of glass as nero intenso.

Black and white is trickier than you might think ;D

The webbing is a quirk of the Hades glass, you don't get that with the standard Effetre and Vetrofond trans blacks. The problem with these two glasses is that they are actually very dark transparent purple or blue shades and this becomes noticeable when you start to layer up small dots with white in between.

Tuxedo from CiM is a great priced standard trans black which look  a truer black shade when used as layered dots. The thing about Tuxedo though is that there is a reaction between it and Effete white. The Effetre white gets a dark organic looking center - interesting but not the crisp look you are after. I have not tried Tuxedo with other makes of white glass yet.

I did try it using the Effetre black as well and still got the same effect :)  the image above is a mix of hades and effetre.  Perhaps I need to try a different black or white?

This is standard effetre white and vetrofond black:

You can see on the bead right at thr front where the black has gone blue-like, thats frit mixed with clear so its very thing layer of black glass- whereas for any thicker application the vetrofond black seems to hold up ok.

Ciel

Thank you - I feel an order for some vetrofond black is required!

I see from my notes (yes I do pay attention to people's tips sometimes!) that Trudi recommends Peace white.
Lovely effect you've achieved there though, Ciel :D

??? I don't get that effect with normal Effetre white on Effetre black. (There's a white-on-black scroll, second-newest pic in my flickr from last week's beads). Ah, were you using intense black? Like Jolene says, your black dots on top of white would probably have looked purple with standard black.

Redkite

This is ordinary effetre black and white (with crystal clear):

But I know you can sometimes get a rim of purple around the edge of the white, so it's not guaranteed to be crisp.

This is effetre black and white

If you notice, I make sure I don't have small dots of black on top of white unless I leave them raised. I also work it cool and slow as I find over heating it can cause fuzzy edges  ;)

I'll have a bit more of an experiment with peace white, I'm sure I have a stick or two somewhere!  I assumed that Effetre black was the only shade, so I'm not sure if its intense or not, but I'll see what I have in my sample packs.

Thank you :D
