Anyway, I wanted to show the beads I was painting during Di's open day on Friday (8th October 2010) as I'm quite excited about what I tried.  Apologies it's a bit of a novel!

Basically I made some beads the night before using vetrofond (COE104), including my first lentil!  They were annealed overnight and left on the mandrels, to aid painting but also so I could try flame firing the enamels on.  I have many different types of enamel that I use in the studio, which all fire at different temperatures, can be mixed or not and also do different things when over fired, mixed with things outside the range etc.  So when I started making the enamel kits, the easiest thing was to use the same range so it was mixable and also fired at the same temperatures.  However the ones in the kits fire at between 620 - 720c which is too high for a standard anneal of a 104 bead, but in theory could be garaged and then flame fired.

Here are the results -



So, 4 beads, all a bit different.  The first one was a white base, painted with blues and a yellow sun, the blackness has occured because I tried a bit of low fire transparent enamel in the washes I was using, obviously this has burnt out due to the high temperature of the torch, but the other blue was fine.  The second was a black base with white enamel painted on and scratched away, quite a boring design but it shows another way of working with the enamels and also how they retain the crispness of the scratched line even when torched.  The third was a two tone blob in white and clear, which I painted mostly with the high fire but a little of a low fire bottle green, which has overfired to a blueish tint.  I like that you can see the design through the clear and this has loads of potential I think.  The last one was another white base that I entirely painted with black, torched and then stuck die cut stickers on once it was cool.  I then sandblasted it, which has given the crisp design and there's nothing to stop you taking this back up and encasing with clear or working further.

Anyway, I hope that gets the braincells firing as much as mine or at least explains what I was up to in my little corner on Friday!

The ribbed beads look fantastic!
I have the small round ribbed roller and am not quite happy yet with my results, the ends of the beads are not perfect. Next torch time, I will try rolling the rounds first in a size smaller to get perfect ends and then only in the ribbed cavity...

The disc beads look aamzing; wonderful colour combination!

OK please be gentle... in fact I am having great difficulty getting up the nerve to post, given such beautiful beads this week, anyway I have been practicing encasing today, after "borrowing" some patience from Manda yesterday (Mango Beads) this is what I managed-

Wow some fabulous beads here, very gorgeous. 

I made my first 40mm lentil about 2 weeks ago now but only just photographed it last week.  I'm very pleased with it even though its quit a simple one.
