Red glass question

Hi, just wondering which red glass I can use to get a true red colour?

I have just been experimenting with what I thought would be nice red and black stripey beads...but now that they are cooled (not annealed as no kiln yet) they look black and orange....like something left over from halloween! I was using Effetre medium red.

Can anyone tell me which colour they use for a proper red? Thank you!

Try eff purple red, it'd sooo yummy!

You need to strike the red. Let the bead cool and then waft it back in the flame - it will darken into red.
Otherwise, as Vicki says, use an opaque.

There are some lovely reds around but the more vibrant are transparent & need striking

Ooh, if you want transparents I swear by Reichenbach garnet, it's less fussy and often doesn't need to strike much

CIM do a lovely rich red too.

thanks everyone! I must have a look at the CIM and Reichenbach colours.
It was an opaque red that I was using, do you have to strike the opaques as well as the transparents?

I am using effetre medium red for opaque and have not had any probems with it, it made great red noses and is lovely with copper green.

You can get a very wide range of reds from the opaques too according to how they strike.

I love CIM sangre, and there is an Effetre special dark crimson that is a good dark red.

I find some blacks can leach the colour out of reds, they must have some metal in them (the blacks). Eff purple red is a really deep red, so even if the colour leaces a bit, it should be OK. Yhough it does turn midnight blue if you add silver......Opaque reds don't strike as much, so you should be fine.
