Is CIM known to be shocky??

Huh, so far I've found CiM to be probably the least shocky of everything I have. But I may just be lucky as my anise also likes me!

In general I find cim glasses a lot more shocky than the normal effetre colours. Today I have ordered myself a single candle simple food warmer - with a tile on top I hope it to be just what I need, both for tricky rods and the many murrini I work with.

Where did you order this from Julie?  I find my hotplate takes up too much room on my desk !I'd be very interested in this!

I did try a baking sheet on top of my kiln, but it got too hot to pick up

I find it hugely shocky or at least some colours I went through a whole rod of Argentium ( spelling ! ) this week just exploded all over the place but the next rod was fine - i could see tiny air bubbles in it .

I've only had one *really* shocky rod of CiM and that was marshmallow so I stuck it in the kiln to anneal with everything else, it's not skocky no more!  I do that with all shocky glass like effetre pistachio.

I have generally found the CIM pinks and the light whites - marshmallow, cirrus etc - to be very shocky but never had a problem with lapis. I think I might be lucky as I torch inside in my centrally heated dining room (or what was a dining room and is now my study/studio).

I've never found Lapis shocky, in fact I've never had a shocky CiM. I have had some shocky glass though, and I saw this advice somewhere (can't remember, sorry if it was someone here  ) which basically said:
Hold the rod really far out in the flame, where it is barely warm, hold it almost vertical so the heat can travel gently up the rod, and hold for a while. Move slightly closer and hold again. The glass should start to glow slightly. Hold in the same place until the whole of the end is glowing, then you should be able to bring it to the the part of the candle you usually use to melt.
Thanks to whoever wrote that, I don't lose anything from any rods that I know to be shocky.

Hi - yes, I generally do try to warm up all the rods gently, in fact I have my own improvised rod warmer just for the job! It just seems to be letting me down with the Lapis, maybe it is the batch I got. I might try the annealing first idea - never thought of that.

I have used a lot of Lapis but last weekend had one rod that was particularly shocky - may be the batch - I did try warming on top of kiln but though it stopped the explosions I still got the quiet crack just when I had wound on enough glass.   

Cim is the only glas I have noticed the line of bubbles on as well

I found Freman and Sangre shocky. I think it's the weather that causes the glass to get shocky. I found this time of year it is bad for it

All my glass was being shocky yesterday!  Thus I foolishly picked up a rod to warm slightly in my hand before using - buuuuut - being a sievehead due to lack of sleep forgot I'd used it in the last few mins and it was still quite hot!!! (oh fancy - duh!) - so that taught me a useful lesson-ette!
