Lush!

I need some more black glass and just wondered what people think is the best black to have? I'm really just thinking Effetre or Vetrofond I think, just something basic ..

i have always used Effetre and i am in need of some also, you have just reminded me

i am a creature of habit, daren't try anything new or different

if it works, don't fix it

the major difference between the two is that ordinary vetrofond black remains solid black and is totally unreactive with other glass - and effetre goes purple when pulled into stringer as it is actually very VERY dark purple transparent (hence its product code and location in the transparent section of the effetre price list.. they are both completely compatible and work well with all base colours.. it is straight forward horses for courses..

the balck that reacts with ivory etc is the effetre nero intenso hand made black... the black CiM colour hades is like the vetro black - solid and dense even in stringer form..

the best "cheat" with effetre plain black stringers in to do encased stringers, then it too stays more or less solid black.. anyone else got more feedback?...

i have both, lol and i actually prefer the vetrofond black, i think it's fantastic but at the end of the day it depends on you and what your using it for, vetrofinds worth a try though ;D

I use vetrofond and I like it.  I have tried one rod of effetre and I do use effetre pre-prepared stringers, but I prefer vetrofond on the whole.  I've also used a little intense black stringer, but that was for it's 'webbing' properties and not for general black stringer work and that's good, too  ;D

Q - Do you do intense black by any chance?  I got mine from USA, but when I run out...!!

I use effetre black for basic - and for stringerwork I use CiM hades which also works as a good alternative to nero intense/intense black - it even does the funky feathering on superheating and reactive with ivory too (well for me anyway!), its also very very stiff as a stringer so great for control.

we have ALL the blacks, and even have stringer of effetre orniary and nero intenso too!...  ;D ;D

If you do a lot of black stringer work...hades is perfect...it is a stiffer glass!!  I normally myself just use effetre black.

Well I'm gonna take some good advice from you lot.

I've been using Vetro black and that works just fine, so I'll just get more of that for the basic stuff. And I was kind of playing with the idea of some Nero but I recently got a couple of rods of Hades which I haven't used yet, and I didn't know that webs too so I'll pull some stringers.

Thanks folks, ya came up trumps again  ;D ;D

Do you mean make like a silvered hades stringer?

Oooh, I'm all excited now, I've got a couple of beers in the fridge, Ken's warming up and The Geoff Show is on Virgin at 10 - pretty good evening in my book!

Yup! though I have never tried it yet and apparently if you apply silver leaf to it too and reduce it it goes funky:

I had lots of issues with my last batch of vetrofond black.  I found that after working it for awhile it kept getting a "haze" on the surface that would not go away. Very annoying.

I'm back to using Effetre, and when I need detail, I use the intense black.  I've got some Hades that I have to haul out and try as well.
