At the risk of being laughed off the forum.  Is there such a thing as smelly glass?

Earlier in the week my glass making efforts produced the most awful odour. It permeated everywhere.
I checked for leaks. None.
Is the bottle nearly empty?  No.

I took the bottle and torch to Calor centre, where everything was checked and tried but couldn't repeat the smell..the question was asked "were you using a new glass?"

Tonight I started torching and husband appeared to complain about the smell. He also suggested it was the glass. I changed colours and the smell went away.

Any suggestions?

This has never happened to me, though I do get a 'torchy smell' when bead making. What glass was it, or what combination? did it smell like 'bad eggs'?

i have known glasses to give off smell when i work them in the hotshop, most commonly enamel white.
I tihnk it is linked to the ingredients added to the clear glass to make the colour

Weird. What colour? Can I have a sample, please? :-)

Hi Sean

It is common or garden effetre light green 022. quite a thick rod.

The smell was not rotton eggs i.e. gas leak. Even though I did take it to calor to make sure.

I am going to try it again this morning. If it happens again the rod is yours Sean.

Was it on an extra hot day?

helenfc

Was it maybe some perished rubber band residue, I have had that before, it was pongy x

Emma it was a hot day but not extra hot. Does air temperature make a difference.

Helen. It was a fresh rod and I hadn't cleaned it.

I have used the rod again and got a much reduced smell.  More of a whiff.

I really don't think it can be the glass thats smelly. Must have been a coincidence?? What set up do you have? Do you use an extractor and an oxy con set up?

Hi Emma,

Yes I have a powerful extractor, a Minor torch and my oxycon is called .....Emm.... So you can guess where that came from. To be honest I can't believe it was the glass either but it wasn't the gass, it wasn't the oxy ( I spoke to Martin about that possibility ) but it was there and it was very nasty. I am still feeling anxious and a bit insecure about it.

Ok I would suggest you turn on the extraction on its own for 10 minutes and see if the problem comes back. If it does then it could be the extraction motor?
Its really a process of elimination .
