Can anyone tell me why this has happened? I made a pretty set of beads using Iris Violet with Fine silver and triton stringer squiggles..excited to get them out of the kiln and they are a sludgy brown  >:( gutted..It's patchy in places too I wonder if it's because they were too close or possibly touching other beads?

I'm using the bead cube on batch anneal.

sounds like the silver has fumed it a bit? do you have any pics? probs someone who knows more than me will be along shortly, but I know the iris colours are quite saturated and certainly iris blue is 'fumable', and reduces. most likely a metallic mish-mash gone slightly wrong. perhaps some activated charcoal in the kiln would help...  :-\

As Helen says - you've used three very reactive colours there - any thing that starts with "iris" is a reactive (metallic) glass. If you reduced your Triton to make it shiny you would also have reduced your Iris Violet too. The Iris family of glass is a little trickier to reduce than Double Helix, being an oder type of glass, so chances are it went sludgy when you reduced your triton.

Hi Helen and Sal,

Sorry I posted and ran I had a dentist appointment..

I reduced the Triton yes and the purple remained a beautiful colour. I see what you mean I'm a noob at this still but thanks for the advice.

as you can see..the purple on it's lonesome on the right is one that I did using the same glass but with goldstone one..no sludgy colour there..lesson learnt thank you ladies Muwah! x

as if the day can't get any worse I have to have a root canal!  :(

This turns brown for me even when it's just a spacer on it's own.  I have made 15 spacers and only two of them are not brown  :(  I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.  They go in the kiln a happy lovely purple and come out the kiln BROWN.  I have found lots of uses for this brown as there aren't any other browns quite like it but it would be nice to know how to keep it purple in case I ever actually want a purple

(I'm on a hot head)

Krysia - you could try dunking the bead in Etch-All for a few seconds - that'll get rid of the brown, as it's a metallic coating. But it'll also get rid of any "lustre" type stuff you have on there - i.e.Triton. However, if you have just "conventional" stuff on there it won't be affected.
Mahzhah - you could try the same just to see if there is purple under the sludge! It won't do your triton any good though. Sorry to hear about the root canal. Ouch  :(

good luck with the root canal hun  :-X  x
maybe the coke/cillit bang trick would help? x

Lilley

If you want to keep the beads shiney and not matt then you can put them in very cheap coca-cola rather than etch-all and see if that gets rid of the sludge - works for me with opaque dark turquise (goes into kiln looking turquoise comes out nasty grey silvery but a couple of days in coke and they are turquoise again) also works for copper green but I think you would loose any wanted reduction shineyness from Triton and similar so I wouldn't do this with beads made from them.
Hope the tooth canal work goes ok.
Glass - lampworked, blown, kilncast or fused and slumped, it's all good!

Paint nail varnish over the triton and then dip in etch-all or cola (or loo cleaner)  That way you may be able to get rid of the sludge and still keep your lovely shiny triton.

It's not so bad.  I was terrified the first time I went for root canal work, I'd heard the horror stories.  Actually it was pain free (gimme the novacaine matey) and very very boring.  Not helped that the dentist had the cricket on so he and the nurse could keep up with the score.  I nearly fell asleep.  Was a bit achey afterwards but think that was the strange angle they pulled my face into rather than anything else.

Good luck.

As for the beads, no ideas from me; I only ever get browns from these fabulous glasses on my HH.

Thank you ladies..I just find it odd that I've used the same glass, and some have turned sludgey and others have stay the same purple colour and they all went in the kiln together. I'll try another purple. I'm quite pee'd off about these. In a way I'm glad other people have had similar results with this glass..I'll bear in mind about the Iris range.

Yeah the root canal..so long as they give me enough anaesthetic I don't care lol

Krysia@No98

Na, don't take it personally.  I know what you mean though, I put four in at the same time and two came out purple and two brown and I have been making more an more, putting them in different parts of the kiln, then wondering it if was reacting to some other glass...  I have almost got to the stage that I will relabel it brown  ;)

My only root canal experience was fine too - just equally boring. With me it wasn't the cricket, it was having to listen to betsy, my dentist natter on the phone to her mate for half an hour whilst she fiddled away with the hand file thingy.

And it was an upper tooth, which is harder to pain-relieve, AND I have the non-adrenaline injections (to avoid panic attacks caused by the adrenaline in normal ones) - which to not last as long as the normal ones either.

AND... I am a total wuss.

So I am sure you will be fine!

As for the beads, I quite like the browny colour actualy!
