I bought this glass last summer, just before I moved, and didn't have a chance to play with it before I packed everything away.

Got it out yesterday, and made a complete hash of it.........tried a couple of spacer beads; the colour separated out into muddy red and clear over the top. Made a heart bead, and this beautiful transparent red glass has gone completely opaque, bit like dried blood.  ??? ???

I'm on a HH with bulk set up, and worked the glass quite cool. Haven't annealed the beads yet (I batch anneal), but I'm wondering if it's worth it or whether they go straight into the fugly jar.

Any help or suggestions would be really gratefully accepted!

Sounds like it's a striker.

The blood red (or "liverish" colour) is where the glass has over struck, while the clear is where it hasn't struck at all.

Make a small spacer and get it quite hot while you are forming the bead, then pull it out of the flame. It will probably be totally clear.

Let it cool for about 30-30 seconds out of the flame.

Reintroduce it to the top of the flame and bathe it until the colour starts to change. This is striking.

Bathe it until you have the transparent red color and then put it aside for annealing.

If you get this bead hot again it may unstrike and go clear. Striking is a temperature process.

Striking glass often strikes immediately when it is encased and the ones you made may well strike in the kiln, but the overstruck ones will still be cloudy and a bit yucky.

Garnet does indeed strike, but only really if over-heated. I'm surprised you have had a problem on the HH, it's usually cool enough for this red. Did you work with it for quite a long time?

No, I knocked out a couple of spacer beads really quickly.

I know that cim's sangre can go cloudy any yucky if it's too hot. Also try working a little further out in the flame - it might help.

I'm naff with both of those. I have many murky brown spacer beads.  I am going to try with these tips too

Thank you!
