Hi. I just have a quick one. I am a little confused.
I have some silver glass, triton I think it is called, and a HH torch.
I know you have to cover the holes so it reduces, do you do this while you are melting the rod and when you are melting it in to the bead?
Probably a bit silly I know, but will the flame be hot enough to melt the rod? and how long can you cover the holes for?
Thank you

Hi Sarah,

Not silly, it's one of those easy if you know how things.

I got great results from triton on my HH.

The triton will melt as easily as anything else your using, use it however you want to decorate your bead in the way you usualy would with anything else.

Once you're happy with the bead, let it cool slightly, out of the flame until the glow has dropped.

Cover the holes on your HH, which makes a bit of a roar, but don't worry that's normal, your just removing the oxygen, the flame will go orange.

Then flash the bead back in to the flame and you should get the metalic, reduced reaction you see so often, repeating this, without reheating the bead will get different effects.

Un-covering the holes and re-Heating the bead will remove this reaction, but you can repeat this process pretty much indefinatly.

Just play around and see what happens, that's what it's all about, I'm sure you'll have great fun with triton  ;D  ;D  ;D

Probably the best way actually without wasting any glass is just to heat the end of your rod of triton until it glows and then follow the steps I mentioned, let it cool a little, cover holes, flash in flame, you'll see the reactions on the end of the rod  ;D

Redhotsal

With all reducing glass - just use it like normal glass and then at the end  - when you've finished your bead, do the reducing. If you're on a hothead you can cover the holes at this point but Triton will reduce easily anyway - even without covering the holes.

I have a few tutorials on my blog on both striking (not so good on a HH) and reducing silver glass . . . the only difference with a HH on reducing is just that, instead of turning down oxy and up gas, you cover the air holes .  . . the rest of the steps are the same.

Brilliant! I used some yesterday and thought I had ruined it by putting it in the flame and melting it like normal. But obviously I hadn't even done the reducing step yet!
Thanks guys!
