Hi Everyone
I'm very very new to all this and would like to splash out on a beginner's kit but was really disappointed to see how expensive the safety glasses are.
Does anyone know where I could find a second hand pair.  I tried on eBay but couldn't find any when I searched under 'safety glasses'.  Is there something else I should be calling them?
Any help gratefully received.

Hi Bertie,
You could try 'didyum' glasses or goggles. There is another name for the lense but it escapes me just now - I'll have a hunt (no doubt someone will post it before I find it though!!!)
There was a link to Warm Glass recently which had them a bit cheaper.

Do a search for didys or didyum on FH and see what you find.

There was a pair of glasses in my starter kit - might be worth looking around a bit?

Shirley

hmmmm, might seem expensive, but worth every single penny, imho

Hi,

I bought my starter kit from martin Tuffnell, and it did include safety glasses.

Have a look at the website, there was a couple of choices.

Good luck

Caroline

i know they seem expensive but when you think about what could happen if hot glass gets in your eyes then they are worth every penny

I second all thats been said in support of wearing eye protection. It may seem expensive in short term but worth it long term. They should last years. I have had my curent pair about 20 years and they have just about "died" now and I expect to pay approx £200 easy as they are prescription. I know several glassblowers who have suffered poor eyesight and it just mabe a coincidence but after 40 years one never knows. I started working soda in the flame with no didymuims ( about 1969 !!!)and it was only after about three years that I got hold of some. Thankfully now a days we are all more safety aware.

I also got a great pair with my starter kit, I always wear them and actually even though I do not wear glasses normally they are really comfy.

I got a pair on eBay for £5 second hand once. Mind you, they are REALLY manky and need a thorough clean. They still have "glassblowers grime" on the ear bits. Euuuuuuuuuuw.
Trawl eBay.com sometimes theres a bloke who sells them for £16.

I wear glasses just to see ok, dose any body know (or has) lenses that will go over normal specks cause £200 for a pair would be wonderful but nobody would eat for a while, when I used to do this for a living I didn't have glasses, age dose that to you but I know how good those lenses are to use and I want a pair but I need to see as well

I'm just the same Winny. Martin has lenses that clip on to your reading glasses.

Donna@Rockin' Beads

I recently bought a panel so I could use my reading glasses. I think I like the panel but I kind of wish I'd thought to get the clip ons!!!

mizgeorge

I tried the clip ons and found them incredibly heavy - they hurt my nose enough to give me a headache! I now have a shield, which I love. When I get a more permanent place to work, I'm going to mount it from above (like Mary's - which looks SO cool) so it doesn't get in the way of anything else.

The biggest problem I have with my eyes is that I don't see circles at all well, it runs in my family, so things can get a little distorted with out my glasses. I like the idea of the visor / screen but clip ons are how I manage in the sun, when we get some. It's now on my wish list and saving hard
Thanks

My clip ons from Martin are virtually the same shape as my glasses. I got the impression that they come in one or two shapes but I may be wrong. I don't find them heavy at all when attached to my glasses. I did buy them at a bead fair so I could see what the fit was like though. My work space is so cramped, I don't think I have space for a shield.
