Hi,

I have some 5mm mandrels and want to put metal inserts into the holes (sorry, I don't know the technical term here  :)). Can someone let me know what tools and fittings I need and where I can get them from.

Also, once fitted, would these still fit the beadable products (wine bottle stoppers etc) that are 3mm thick?

Many thanks

Tony

Rivets?  You can get them from Tuffnell Glass and the only thing you need is some glue and a steady hand.  2 part epoxy will work at a pinch but tends to fail after a while.  I use a Scotch Weld product but it is pricey http://www.warm-glass.co.uk/dp460-epoxy-glue-50ml-with-plunger-p-312.html

They will still have a 5mm hole in the bead, so will fit bottle stoppers etc just fine, although I find them a bit big and move around, so make my beads for things like this on 3mm mandrels.  I don't core my 3mm holed beads or anything for bottle stoppers though.

Rivets are considerably cheaper from Palmer Metals, especially if you buy in bulk - http://www.palmermetals.co.uk/shop/sterling-silver-bead-grommet-5-0mm.html - they do other sizes (and a fancy one with a wider rim).

For solid cores, I'd recommend doing some research into the different corers available. I've used this one for years, coring and selling literally thousands, and I love it - http://retroglasstools.com/beadliner.aspx - NB it is very important to measure and cut your tubing accurately and to prepare the ends well, then it cores like a dream. I'm happy to share details of my measurements and methods if you want more info.

Tubing can be bought from Ginkodesigns on Etsy (925 sterling silver) or RioGrande.com (999 fine silver). I don't know why no one in the UK seems able to supply it at a reasonable price!

Thanks for one information. I will look into rivets and tools.

Thanks Tony

I don't think Palmers rivets are as well made as those sold by Martin, hence the difference in price  :)

I would very much like to know more about the corer for solid cores, the one you use ajda. Maybe you could post a couple of Pictures of riveted beads you have made With this Equipment. Also: is it difficult to cut the tubes, what Tools would you recommend for the job, and what would be the optimal thickness, or inner and Outer diameter for the tubing.

I have posted some tuts on using the Retro, Jim Moore, Nortel, Impress and the Mango Beadliners:

That will also give advice on cutting the tubing. I am having a glassy get together on Saturday in South Oxfordshire where you can see all of these tools. Please pm me if you are interested in coming along.

Irene - there is a forum member called Charlotte "theflyingbedstead" who recently did a series of excellent reviews of different bead corers, including the one I have - and I added some info and tips of my own in a reply to that post. I'd strongly recommend having a read through it (and the other reviews she did).

She mentions various sizes/types of tubing - I've tried several myself, but my favourite with this corer is the sterling silver tubing sold by Debbi Hackeson of Ginkodesigns on Etsy. It measures 5.08mm outer diameter and 4.37 inner diameter, and comes pre-annealed.

Once you've had a look at Charlotte's review(s), do get back to me if I can be any further help.

Ah - I seem to have crossed in the ether with Charlotte herself - so you've got it straight from the horses mouth!

Rashbels sell sterling tube both 5 & 6mm. The best way to cut tube is with a tube cutter you can buy small cutters for a few pounds which will give perfect square cuts easily and accurately.

Thank you, I will read those posts carefully, look like its a lot of information there. And thank you for the invitation Charlotte, only problem is I live in Norway, so the trip would be a bit too long I think.... ha ha.
