I seem to remember that Sal mentioned using polarised filters to check  beads for cracks. Have I remembered this correctly and if so could someone give me some more information ( like where to get hold of them) I'm always terrified of using beads that may have slight hairline cracks in them ( slit throats springs to mind)

They show up the stresses in an unannealed bead.  If you want to look for cracks then a magnifying glass might be better.  The stresses look like a dark cross within the bead.  Facinating stuff.  You can use it with a transparent bead to confirm that your annealing cycle is doing it's stuff.
