Definitely just ream the bead more, I make mine on a 5mm manrel and them ream them to almost 6, I just keep reaming til the tube fits in and moves up and down. I try to keep the bead centred as I am flaring.

Thank you!!!

I reamed to 6.25 as my tube is 5.5 OD, added just 1mm each end in length and didnt anneal (last 2 annealed ones buckled inside as too soft but its copper)

It worked!! tried on 6 totally different dimensions of beads and success on all of them

Thanks so much
Now I can play all day as I retired from the 'proper' job....

Ilona

Thats great news to hear your coring has worked :)

I have bought some 5mm mandrels, so what size tubing should I be buying? I think I bought it from Rashbels the last time and bought one that doesn't need anealing but I can't remember what size I need to order ::) Help :)

lampworklover

Ilona I use 5mm mandrels from Martin and bought 5.5mm tubing from Rashbels last week, worked fine for me  :)

chipperpottery

I am so pleased it has worked for you. :D

I use a 5mm mandrel and use a 6mm od tube.
does not need much reaming for a nice fit.

I would have said that 1mm each end is a bit too stingy - I add 3.6 to 3.7mm overall which gives a nice flat edge. I would have thought with just 1mm either side you are probably getting more of a flared edge?

She's made of real glass. She got real real emotion. But my heart laughs I have that same sweet devotion!

I would also say you need to leave more silver either side of your bead 1mm is a bit tight for a good finish . !mm will as Kaz says really only just push the silver into the hole in 'trumpet fashion' We leave 3.5 or more depending on the shape of the bead hole :)

I have a batch cooking at the mo and will try more than 1mm, maybe I need to anneal the silver. Did try longer but it split but that was before I got your tips on extra reaming. The annealing on copper made it too soft but then again the bead hole may have been too tight.
I'm off to experiment tomorrow
Have a lovely beady weekend everyone

I'm no expert but reading through my notes I took on Manda's course, you would add +/- 3mm to the width of the bead.  We then annealed the silver before use.  We used and I'll be using the seamless tubing from Rio Grande, I think it has less chance of splitting?  My corer arrived today, I've found the brulee torch, rescued the cillit bang for pickling from the bathroom, cleaned the beads .... so will give it a go tomorrow.
