Sooty problems

I'm on a HH with mapp gas canisters and I'm having a problem with sooty glass.  I think I'm working in the right bit of the flame, but as soon as I introduce a glass rod, particularly reddy colours, it soots up straight away.

I wondered if the problem is maybe I have the torch open too far / not far enough??

Sounds like you are in the wrong part of the flame, try moving further out and see how you go.
