Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but if anyone can help it would be great..I have just recently got back into my lampworking, having sold my whole collection of stuff last summer.
I bought a 2 year old oxy (one of Martins) think it's called a 590i...one of the older models anyway.

Only used it twice since I bought it last month and both times after about 5 mins it just goes to a red light and conks out?

I did contact the seller, and she suggested bringing it into the warm as it had been outside and not been used for a while, I brought it in the house for a few weeks, pre warmed the shedio today so it was nice and toasty, plumbed the oxy back in, and after 2 little beads it has conked twice and now I'm scared to put it back on..
Any tips gratefully received, is it a goner? if not is it dear to fix and how would I go about fixing it?

Thanks,
Mandy

Redhotsal

The fact that is works for a bit and then conks out suggests that something is working and then as it gets hots it manages to work it's way loose. The obvious candidate is the fan in this situation. Open it up if you can (unplug it first) and see if you can locate the fan - which is usually a black boxy looking item about 6inches square and about 1.5inches high. It plugs into the unit using a pair of push in connectors and is usually located at the base of the unit. If you can find it make sure it is well pushed in and then give it another go. It's almost always the fan that is the problem. If the unit is very noisy anyway it could also be that the fan is on its way out and it might be worth replacing it. I believe you can get replacement fans from Tuffnells website.

Nope, nothing is working, had it open, hoovered, wiped, secured fan, checked wiring, Hubby an electrician, said all looks fine, after 2 beads shudders to a halt and red light, kept trying today thought if I persevere it may just stay on but noooooo

Dunno if this matters but it says it has 34870 hours or whatever it is measured in on the clock..is this very high?

Cheers

try a search i know sal did a comprehensive list somewhere of most of what can go wrong and how (if you feel confedent to have a go ) can be fixed .......fan....pipes....dampness/cold affecting insides are the usual suspects

if all else fails give martin a ring he has a service option ......

hope you get it sorted soon

If it's one of Martin's, can he help?

Threads like these make me realise my HH isn't so bad after all.  The only things I have to conk out are the gas but the petrol station is open late, or the Progrow, but they sorted that out very quickly when it went into meltdown (literally!!) and without fuss thanks heavens.

Mine had a problem a couple of weeks ago, I sent for a new filter and it works so much better now, the filter was a bit black.

Doesn't it come with a 1 year guarantee if it comes from Martin? - I'd be inclined to contact him about it if you only bought it recently.

Must be very frustrating

I suggest contacting Martin and see if he will take it for a service. As well as the obvious fan thing, he can also test and replace other electrical components. If your hubby is an electrician he might have a little looksie to see if any of the components on the motherboard shows signs of age, but if I were you I'd just give Martin a call - I imagine he has seen it all  :)

Definatly sounds like the fan. The fan is located in the base of the unit below the pump. Get your hubby to lift out the pump (4 bolts) so you can see the fan below. Then power it up to see if the fan is spinning. Alternativly remove the outer casings to increase air flow and see if it runs for longer, if it does then heat is thes issue and the fan has probaly failed.

Removing any casings obviously presents a hazard and should not be attempted without care.
