Turned kiln off by mistake :O(

Did a silly thing this evening - I've been trying to make some decent swap beads for Friday's meeting at Di's, so have been shoe-horning in a few extra sessions...well today I just thought I'd squeeze one more bead into the time before I should have been making dinner for the hungry menfolk, then quickly tapped in the up, up, start.........but I miss-tapped and got a different reading to usual and panicked!!! With hindsight all I should have done was wait for the reading to clear and do it again. But, oh no, I got all technical and turned off and started trying to reprogram  - took me several minutes to calm down and sort it out and by then it had cooled down to 460 degrees. Don't know if the beads will have survived that....

I'm sure beads cool way quicker than that in my fibre blanket, I guess if you got it back on again it'll be fine? Fingers crossed

I've pressed the wrong buttons before and I just set the programme running again from scratch and then re-jump the segment pressing the right buttons!

When I first got my kiln, a few weeks ago, I tried to skip to the next segment and got in a heck of a mess.  Meanwhile temperature was droipping like a stone.  I turned it off then started again and the beads survived.  In fact they must be reasonably OK as I managed to drop them all over the garden, falling over one of the cats, when I was bringing them into the house.  I trod on a few (I'm under tall for my weight) and they are fine.  I guess these things are tougher than we think.

One of my cats has taken to fishing beads out of the plastic tub I put them in, throwing across the conservatory and then playing with them.  He quite likes the mucky bead cleaning water as well.  I do hate it when I am forced to be tidy by my cat!!

Now do a batch anneal and they will be fine, there are programs for this on the forum any problems, pm your phone number and i will talk you through later tonight.

Well given that the strain temperature point for soft glass is around 454, and you didn't get that low, I'm sure they'll be fine.

I'm sure they'll be fine,  if in doubt pop them back in on a batch anneal programme.  The biggest boob I ever made was to put the wrong programme on and when I opened the door the next morning they were all welded together and stuck to the bottom of the kiln cause I'd used the fusing programme instead of annealling.  Dohhhhh.

Sorry I had to laugh at that one Katie! Yes they seemed fine this morning - no cracks, passed the polarised filter test, (though I could only look at a fin of clear glass as the rest were opaque), but thank you everyone

Hmmm, thinking about it, if the strain point is 454 and my kiln seems to read quite a bit higher than room temperature in the mornings, then it could actually have been below the strain point, when showing 460...perhaps I will do a batch anneal on them to be on the safe side.

Marg - if you're planning another anneal as you go session - just pop the beads in before you turn the kiln on!

Yeah, Trudi, I've started doing that (when I remember ) with little ones I've done in odd moments and left in the blanket . Getting quite organised now, except when under pressure - then I do mad things like turn on the gas tank without closing the torch

Oh Marg, you and I would get along famously then, I've done the kiln thing many a time, and the gas cannister thing.

And Katie - I've done the bead welding thing too - I cried - it was for a commission for a bracelet and I'd worked my socks off with limited time to complete it ....argh!
