How do you work with glass shards?

I've seen glass shards mentioned quite alot and was just wondering how you work with them?  Are they used for any particular special effect or is it just a way of getting a splodge (technical term) of colour into a bead?  Please can anyone de-mystify me?

they are often expensive and reactive colours, because they are thin you get alot of effect for not much glass!

I've got some of Jo's shards, I can show you next time you come over - then you can have a go too

Because they're so thin, they look different from adding a splodge of colour to the bead yourself. So opaques can be translucent - thin silvered ivory shards look lovely that way. Leaving them raised looks great too.
