Encasing CIM

does anyone else have trouble with this? I just got some poison apple and kryptonite and they are usually gorgeous, but when i encase them they crack. have tried with both cim clear and effetre 006 and the result is the same...not having any trouble encasing effetre colours though

any suggestions? $:-\$

I've not tried encasing these colours - but I found from before that some don't like to be encased.

But then I was wondering if they need to be annealed at a higher temp.

I'm not really sure, so not much help really. Sorry.

I know I tried to encase Marshmallow thinking it would be easier to encase as it doesn't bleed like a normal opaque. But I think I might have another go at a higher annealing temp. It may not make any difference who knows.............

Hmm, they're both described as opal, and I know the other opal colours like peacock and halong bay needed to be annealed higher. So maybe what Trudi said?

I had trouble with Red (sangria), I did eventually end up with a set but I lost about 8 beads throught cracks.

Now that's strange - that's a colour I've encased lots of times without any problems! I haven't used it much recently as I found it was striking a mucky red - rather than the lovely clear red I was used to. But I put this down to change in temp (it was the same batch I was using). I must have a go again as I haven't tried it in a while!

I made a set of 10 beads using blackcurrant yesterday and encased them all (which is a major feat for me) and 4 broke in the kiln and 4 have broken during cleaning after annealing. Well gutted but might try a few more of the same colour today but not encase them - I had no idea that some colours just didn't survive well being encased.

The only bead I've had crack all over the place was Kryptonite encased with 006... must have been the phase of the moon - or my crappy bead! Or the magic annealing temp?

no ness my kryptonite was exactly the same

think heather and trudi are right about the annealing temps for opals, but my situation is I can only batch anneal at the moment...rubbish

I've only had problems with cirrus, I've encased Kryptonite lots of times no problem and many others but I know other people have had problems, there have been threads on this before. I haven't got around to trying any of the new colours from the last few releases though.

Do you garage Helen or batch anneal, I wonder if that could make the difference

CIM Berry nearly always used to crack for me until I started to encase with CIM clear - it likes to be with CIM clear, maybe the others are the same.

It could possibly also make a difference on how hot the bead is as it goes into the kiln??
