Can silver glass change 'after' annealling???

Bit of a strange on this??? But over the last day or so I have noticed that some of the raised dots I have on some of my beads using triton and aurae are looking a bit more transparent than they were. I had them at a lovely metallic shine and it seems to have faded slightly.

Is it possible for silver glass to 'settle down' after annealling and become a little more transparent???

I'm on a HH and I hot anneal using an effetre schedule.

Again bit strange and maybe it just something I hadn't noticed before but I thought I'd ask!

The short answer is yes, they can change. Annealing at the higher end of temp range can change surface reactions or overstrike striking colours, and kiln atmosphere can affect it too. A tiny bit of activated charcoal gives your kiln a reducing atmosphere (but don't do this if your elements are exposed, not good for the kiln!). Or anneal for longer at a slightly lower temp.

Thanks for you reply Mary but this seems to have happened weeks after annealling. I've been wearing one piece for about 2 months so I'm wondering if perfume can have something to do with it???

Hi

Reduction effects with silverglass are a surface reaction so can wear off over time. Two months seems very short 'though - but I don't wear perfume.

I don't know for certain but I wouldn't be surprised if perfume had an impact.

Perfume can affect it a lot!! My friend, whom I'd given a Byzantine set, oxidised, managed to wear off the oxidation in weeks!! I couldn't understand it before I saw her putting on her smell one day.

It sounds like you have worn off the silver layer, Debs. If it had gone matt I'd say to give it a rub with a silver polish cloth, but when it's transparent it sounds like it has gone.

Hi

There was a lot of discussion on Torch Bugs about annealing silver glass - and this is the schedule I use for silver glass - I'm using an SC2

Ramp 1 - 700
Temp 1 487°C (910°F)

Hold 12 hours - I set this long and skip when I'm done!
Ramp 2 78
Temp 2 493°C (920°F)
Hold 2 hours

Ramp 3 78
Temp 148°C (300°F)
Hold 0
Ramp 0

Basically what Mary said - lower temp - but anneal for longer.

Thanks for your replies....I thought I was going bonkers or my eyesight was worse than I thought!!

I'll make sure I encase it all from now on...I love my perfume too much to stop wearing it.

Why don't you add perfume to the inside of your elbow instead of your wrist?

Here you are - some have suggested that you may be able to increase the initial ramp - but I've not tried it

Ramp1 149C
Temp1 493C
Hold1 120mins (This is a good "soaking time" – if you have massive beads then you might want to increase)
Ramp2 78C –Temp2 148C
Hold2 0000mins
Ramp3 0000
