Back...with a new workspace

Hello everyone

It's been about three years since I've spent much time at the torch - and that was only a couple of months after getting a Nortel Minor torch, oxycon and a kiln! I was spoiling myself that year it seems and late in the year I treated myself to an old car - an 1988 Morgan 4/4 - which came to live in the garage and made it rather awkward to use. Unfortunately burning glass took a back seat - to the point that my gear got packed up into the loft. But I hadn't "given up" - I just needed some space. So this year we had a new utility room built on the back of the garage: it's home to the washing machine, tumble dryer, freezer, boots, pet food and... my new workspace! And I've even plumbed the gas through the wall from outside.

The first few beads aren't really very good at all - but I enjoyed making them.

The wacky blob on the right is best attempt so far at blowing glass - I'm hoping to be able to make a few baubles, but I think I'm going to waste a lot of glass first!

Welcome back, now can we have pics of the moggy please. My dad has a 1974/5?? one, I've told both him and my brother that it's mine when he pops his clogs. What I've not told him is that he's been booked to take dd to her prom in it when she finishes school in a couple of years.

Magpie, here's my moggy looking her best after some serious cleaning and polishing when I first got her.


My eldest dd hates the car - it's the last thing she'd want to be taken to the prom in. She'd much rather I take her in the crusty, muddy Land Rover Defender I think.

Just a point re your set up.

I sincerely hope, that with your gas bottle installed inside a dust bin, the bin is ventilated around the bottom edge!  A potential very dangerous explosion hazard, otherwise.

Hi RAB,

No, my bin is not ventilated except for the gap around the hole where the hose goes. I guess the risk is that the bin will fill with gas, right, should there be any leak? Why should the holes be round the bottom - is the gas heavier than air? I wanted to keep the gas out of the house but I didn't want the regulator exposed to the elements constantly. I'll get the drill out as soon as I can.

Correct on both counts.  All lpg stores must have floor level ventilation to avoid build up of any gas which may leak/escape. 

About thirty five years ago now, but a local man was killed when a gas flame went out in a kiln and then  causing an explosion on re-ignition. 

Different factory, but I always had someone watching while the kiln was being heated, to warm up for operation, until the oil and gas flames were stable; once hot enough to sustain a pulverised coal flame I felt a lot happier!  I would hope better safety measures are in place these days - but somehow I am not confident of that.
