Decals - low fire

Hoping someone can help! I fused my first decal onto my blank (it was an incredibly long and slow firing but that's ok 'cos it seems to have worked fine). I realised that the finished image was going to turn from the rather lovely black to sepia but to be honest I'm a bit disappointed as the black was nicer. Anyone found a way round t

Hiya,

there are different types of decals around - the ones that turn to sepia are usually printed with ink jet printers, and not with glass pigments - which should keep their colour. So, I think the problem isn't the firing, but the decal itself....though I might be mistaken

Nearly right Sabine, its actually laser printers - certain ones have iron (oxide I think) in the pigment, and this is what fuses to the glass - but as you say will always turn the sepia colour - well, I presume this is what has been used.  You can print them at home with special paper and a laser printer/photocopier, or places like Warm Glass do them.

That's interesting. So to get black as the final colour I would need to have the decal made as a glass pigment one? I got my photo transferred via the ink jet printer through Warm Glass. Could you point me in the right direction for the glass pigment version? Ever hopeful.....

Are you putting this decal onto a curved surface?  Could it be screen-printed directly onto the glass instead?

Are you putting this decal onto a curved surface?  Could it be screen-printed directly onto the glass instead?

I'm putting it onto a flat surface (about 15 by 20cm) but i've never done screen printing before and wouldn't know where or how to start. Apparently there's a place in Keighley that has the facilities but i'm guessing I'd need a modicum of knowledge to use them...

Ah well, I teach screen printing and its very easy to do, plus set up some stuff yourself and you can change the images on your screen everyday if you wanted!
