Hello

I need to get my kiln out of my in-laws to our rental house.

It is a firebrick Paragon Xpress.

I don't know where I heard or read it but I am sure there are some procedures I have to follow to move it safely. After an hour of googling etc etc I have found nothing.
It was somethin to do with protecting the element.

I have to move it in two hours, no delay, the inlaws have sold their house.

Or can I just carefully put it in the car, standing up, surrounded by blankets and drive very slowly.

Any help would be appreciated.

Considering kilns are usually delivered either in boxes or on pallets, I don't think you need to worry - I moved my Skutt Hot Start Pro a year or so ago, by (Getting two strong men to) lift it into a car boot and drive it over town.

I wrapped a blanket round the outside to prevent it bashing against anything in the boot but that was it.  It worked fine at the other end.

That kiln has a top element - the only thing I would suggest is you make sure there's nothing inside the kiln such as shelf, rack or posts that could move around and bash a firebrick or element which I am thinking are on the sides, so easier to hit than my kiln was.

Make sure its empty, and try and place it so that it can't slide around, I can't see why you'd need to do any more than that?

Thanks Dawn.

I'm trying to find my care book (haven't used it in over a year but I'm looking forward to getting back to it).

I've had a sudden flash of memory in my old age and remember that I read that once the element is used its a it more fragile in some way.

Thank you for reminded me to remove the items. I do have a brick shelf and a bead rack in it.

I have been reading through here and it seems lots of people have talked about moving their studio so I presume its ok.

I even read an article about one artist whose kiln fell out of the car when they were transporting it :-(
That shouldn't happen though.

Right mate...one rule.....be gentle!! ;)

No hard and fast rules.
Take all furniture out of the kiln.
no real advantage in packing the inside, it takes time and rarely helps matters.
Close the door and apply the clamp, it sometimes helps to bind around the kiln to ensure the door does not come open or vibrate and rub the bricks.
Treat is as you would a large glass vase, no suddenly bumps etc.
Keep it as near to vertical as possible.
Brace it from falling over in the car.
No Stirling Moss driving.
No crashing through pot holes.
Apply common sense.

At the end of the day, moving any kiln can upset things but 9 times out of 10, if you are sensible, you will be fine.

Thank you Les.

My kiln has safely arrived in its new home all in one piece.

However, I'm not sure the electrics in the house are new enough :-( Will have to wait for the electrician to have a look properly but his first glance wasn't optimistic. Fingers crossed though.
