Help with Silver Core Rivets please!

Hey guys, I have some Silver Core Rivets from Tuffnells but they don't fit inside my beads! On their site it says to make the beads on 5mm mandrels, double dipped. I did that- I dipped them more than twice to be sure and they STILL won't fit!! I even used my battery reamer to file away the inside of the beads and nothing! The rivets fit in about halfway (each) and then are hard to get out again! Do you need a hammer to beat them in or something? Driving me nuts!

Sorry for the rant, any help would be *phew!* greatly appreciated

Hiya Dean,
just ream the beads some more and then epoxy glue them in, if they are a tight fit you have less chance of them coming out again too.

Okay, will do thanks Will just reaming the glass constantly affect the drill bits or will they be fine? This battery one spins quite fast

I wouldn't worry about them Dean, they are cheap as chips to replace.

Okay, I won't Although they aren't that cheap- £4.75 + £4.50 postage! Or it might be £2.50..I won't worry about them but I won't completely lose my mind either Thanks!

ream with the tip of the reamer in water, makes them last longer. I get mine from ebay, lots cheaper

little heads up for you...the replacement bits tuffnell sells do not fit the battery reamer!

unless he has now got new ones in and has forgotten to tell me!

so you will have to get new ones elsewhere anyway, but I haven't bothered looking them up yet.

Hi Dean,

In Denmark 5,2 mm mandrels are recommended for this purpose, they are available but costly: www.ravstedhus.dk

It is available locally in one meter lenghts from where iron and steel is bought, ask your local smithy, they can order it for you if you grease them a bit.
These meter lengths are available with 0.1 mm intervals.
For more even numbers like 2, 2.5, 3, 4 mm etc. it is a lot cheaper to order full lengths of stainless steel, it comes in 3 or 6 meter lengths and cost a fraction if you are prepared to cut it yourself. Easily done with a cheap bolt cutter, ends smooth with a file.
