Cabachon manderl

Hi,

I've just purchased a small cabachon mandrel (as well as some glass  from Martin and was wondering how to use it

Has anyone seen any You Tube videos on using one of these or can you explain how to make a cabachon with it?

I am assuming you put bead release on it, then just make your cabochon shape by putting glass on the face of the disc.  That's how I would do it!

the way i did it- might not be technically correct but it worked - was to basically dip the mandrel in bead release and then wind a bead around the little end tht sticks out, turning the mandrel as you would for a normal bead until it is your desired size. then once the bead was evened out i added some glass to the top, covering the end of the mandrel completely, evened this out again as you would with a normal bead and decorated over that.

when i saw pixie  doing it it i think she put a blob of glass in the middle of the mandrel than span the mandrel upright so centralfugal force made the glass go out to the edges 

i have got one and never got round to being brave enough to use it so good luck and i look forward to seeing the results and picking up any tips the lovely fritters have

you might want to be sure to be wearing a leather apron!!!

I tend to put the bead release on with a plastic spoon and spread it out while spinning the mandrel, rather than dipping.  Make sure you have built it up enough over the little bit of the mandrel that pokes up.

I melt a big gather and plop it on, spreading it out a little with the rod as I spin the mandrel.  Then I tilt the mandrel and heat the edges of the blob while slowly turning the mandrel until i have a round shape.  I did try Lorna's (Pixiewillow) way, but I couldn't get it to move enough - I probably didn't have it hot enough.

Give it a go - it's great fun!  Just remember to have a space ready for it in your kiln before you start!  Shuffling mandrels with a hot cab mandrel in your hand isn't easy!
