need to upgrade my current graphite paddle as it is ragged round the edges and not really serving its purpose any more, but whats better-another paddle or a torch mounted one??

Its a bit messy but you can re sand the one you have back to smooth. Saying that I couldnt do without my torch top marver, I rest presses on it for gauging the amount of glass and my heart press virtually lives on mine at the mo.

im going to get a mounted marver next week ;)...

and glenn is looking for graphite in swops so you could get a swop for your old one  ;D

Vicki

I use both, the torch top marver is good, but sometimes marvering with gravity is needed  :)

I use my torch top one much more. I like having my second hand free to use my tail-stock holder. And I rest things on it like silver foil, so it's right there.

ETA, of course you could get a CG beadroller and use the reverse as a marver...

I think you still might need something hand-held, Shahlaa - I do!

I have both and I use them as a poor man's masher.

I have a hh and I think the torch top was something like £22 from Tuffnells

I use my handheld marver all the time. I got  a really nice long narrow one a few years ago,it is a definite favourite.

Its the one on the right in the top picture in this link

Oooo decisions decisions! Maybe I need both? I do like having one to hand to shape and squish with but think a torch one would be useful too..

Julie where did u get your graphite tile from?? Xxx

Trudi

I use both too. Sometimes the free hand is required and my presses too sit on the torch one - esp the round marver!

Like the idea of using the other side of a cg roller!!!!

I have both but I rarely use the torch mounted marver. I much prefer the hand held paddle. I'm curious though - why is your so ragged? You must be pretty tough on it or have got really soft and rubbish graphite? I've had mine for ten years and apart from a small chip on the very corner it's pristine (and I'm not particularly careful!)

Sal my torch top one is just over a year old and all ragged around the edges, it doesnt move off of my torch but if I knock a mandrel against it it takes another small bit out of the edge, I thought this was normal.

I agree with Sal although I like Kays idea of using the torch one as a press rest  ;) I've had 2 of mine for 2 years and no chips.......yet! I also have a very nice very large one that I got from Manda (Mango beads) that is great and I use that a lot when pressing my hand shaped hearts.

I like both, although I don't use the torch mounted one as much - but it is useful for warming up stuff!

I also much prefer the hand held, though I use both together rather than a masher. It's like an extension of your hand..
