cant make the palladium go different colours

Well, the last time i had a class with Sal we used Palladium and it went different colours..i liked it.
Bought some for Xmas from martin but i cant get it to do anything at all. It just stays silver...what am i doing wrong???

I'm not really into the silver look so much. And i did buy some silver foil, or leaf i cant remember anyway...it isnt burning away like silver leaf does so i know i havent got it mixed up with leaf...it says on the outer package that its Palladium.
So, what am i doing wrong?

Cook the heck out of it. Use more oxygen than propane, but really get it glowing orange. Then dump it in the kiln. That's ll I ever do and I can get greens and pinks. I think the key is high temperature and neutral/oxygen rich flame. You don't see the colours until it comes out of the kiln though. Might not work if you batch anneal.....?

That sounds really cool Sal. I bought some Palladium ages ago from Martin with my birthday money but then didn't know what to do with it - typical really. Do you have any pictures available of something you've made with this effect please?

Thanks Sal...i couldnt remember what we did. I liked the effect..it was fab. I wanted to encase it too. In fact i have encased a bead..but it all looks  a bit burnt at the top...(my special) will see if it has worked tomorra then. Did cook it up a bit. Will have another go with extra heat. Thanks me lovely.
BTW i dont batch anneal, i got a maxi, but u prob forget me telling ya. Revolutionised my life that has...well it would have if i made sets etc to sell...

Haven't ever tried encasing it. Not sure what that would look like. I usually use it to get a silvery metallic effect but without  the associated fuming from loads of silver. It never seems to fume anything so in the case of the first piccy the clear stayed clear without going yellow. If I'd used that amount of silver the clear would have been badly fumed.

It's pretty damned indestructable on your glass though - sits on the surface like a skin and glows like a good 'un if you whack it with a lot of heat.  You can rake it and twirl it though - I "rediscovered" Palladium last year and love the look you can get with it.

Encasing palladium turns it back to silver! Nice effect, but no colours :-((

Lovely beads Sal!
I heat it and heat some more, let it cool a bit then flash through a oxy rich flame ( turn the propane right down)a couple of times to get the colours. Works really nice on dark silver plum too

ooo thanks all...Fabulous work sal.
I encased and it stayed silver.
I will have another go tho with out encasing....i did read somwhere tho that you can use it like dichro when encased cos the colours remain...i was looking for this effect rather than buyin the dichro on copper foil.

Gotta do some decorating ust for a change so will have a go in a few days..
