A kiln designed for use with glass beadmaking, note the racks at the back of the kiln to support the mandrels

In respect to lampworking or fusing a kiln is a thermally insulated box with a heating element that can be heated up to temperatures that are hot enough to either melt and deform the glass (in the case of fusing) or anneal the glass (in the case of lampworking).

Kilns need a controller which will measure the temperature in the kiln using a thermocouple and control the power to the kiln according to a programmable schedule. Controllers can vary from simple pyrometer temperature control, to fully programmable PID control with multiple schedules, ramp and hold times.
