What's the best way to cool AFAP? Some people have said to open the kiln door and let the heat out and others have said to leave the kiln door closed.

What do you use?

My personal advice is to let it cool naturally.

Opening the kiln door - front loaders could cause (more) uneven temperature.  Apparently in top loaders, it can cause brittleness in the lid, not good for the kiln.

There's a few reasons why you might want to vent:

If you're doing something like a slump, and want to stop the process, then flash venting cools it down quick enough.

To get the glass out of the de-vitrification zone as quickly as possible

To speed up the overall cycle (cos you're impatient!)

I did flash vent mine a couple of times til I found I could be doing harm to the kiln.  I think Rachel (Flying Cheese Toastie) pointed out the other day that books recommending flash venting were written a while back before specialist small glass kilns were commonplace (ceramics kilns tend to be REALLY slow to cool down)

To be honest, there's not really a need to do it in most cases.

Thanks for that. The last thing I want to do is break my brand new £500 Paragon. (Although it's still not arrived yet).
