Can portable size Propane be plumbed permanently?

They talk about plumbing in propane on the US forums (www.lampworketc.com) - doesn't help with the legalities here, but if you just want to see what kinds of thing a set up might involve, have a look over there in the Safety section. From what I remember, definitely metal piping, and you'll want a shutoff valve inside as well as one at the tank. They tend to need two regulators, one outside and one inside which can be adjusted because there's a limit in the US as to the pressure gas coming in through a wall can be. Dunno if we have any similar rules.

Just spoke to calor gas and initially they thought it might be possible but I'd need 19kg minimum and it was only going to be about £300 which although its loads of cash and would buy me bead rollers and glass etc I thought it would be a bargain for peace of mind BUT when they checked they say the torch needs the tank pressure to operate therefore piping it wont work so they cant do it.

They did say calor recommend storage outside although use inside is actually ok especially given the safety measures in place the only remaining risk would be in the event of fire, so, I will use the 13kg tank (if I get chicken I will keep it for the summer and move to the yard till its used up) I will then get the small more portable job and the quick releases and take in and out as needed. Calor thought that was a very good option. I'm going to suggest to Martin that he might discuss that option with newbies like me who ask as I'd have gladly bought the quick releases straight away, now I have to get them and hope I can fit them (scared already!)
I promise I wont ask any more propane based questions, the oxycon seems ok so watch out for my daft questions on another topic!
Thanks all of you a million
Helen

Helen, what kind of torch are you using? I'm pretty sure we don't run any torches at full tank pressure in the UK (hence the regulators!). Hot Heads were designed to be run at full, but they work on 4 bar (approx 60 psi, I think) and that's how we use them here. Minors and so on run at much lower pressures (up to 5 psi?). Did they say what pressure you'd actually get if they piped it?

Its a minor, they didnt say what pressure I'd get and as I'm totally ignorant on any of this stuff I just assumed they knew what they were talking about. I did say that the amount of propane being burned isnt huge, but thats probably nonsense to someone who knows their stuff!
I will go back and ask again as I'm sure it wont just be me thats interested. I will get the numbers from them then check maybe with Martin?
Thanks
Helen

Wow! it really is a small world! We get over that way for family gatherings usually once a year or so, been this year but will drop you a mail before next trip in case you want anything brought over!

We will be retiring to France in a few years but over the other side in Haute Vienne in Bussiere-Poitevine. Huge barn with space for loads of propane outside

Good luck! I had a look at the info about Nortels and it says the recommended operating pressure is 0.25 to 5 psi gas pressure for a Minor.

Martin said I need 3 bar, calor say they can only provide 2 bar and that would only be into commercial premises so it wont work. I did give the psi info (thanks for that) also but the answer is still the same - shame

??? In that case I am very confused! Because they're both measuring the same thing (pressure) just in different units. 2 bar is 29 psi...

Guess its a case of it would work just they wont let me have it because I'm not a commercial premises but it might be helpful for anyone who is though they probably already have professionals installing anyway

The bit that really confuses me is that you don't need 2 bar in the first place! 5 psi = 0.34 bar.  ???

I don't know why Martin said you need 3 - anyone know if I'm missing something here?

Enchanted Cobwebs

Might he have meant .3 rather than 3?, I phoned him and he did say 3, maybe 2 but say 3 to be on the safe side. I repeated 3 bar and he said yes, 3bar
