Most first attempts at making larger items "off mandrel" will invariably turn out less than symetrical paperweight shape.

But dont let this deter you from a having a go.  The beauty of this method is you can still do it at smallish torch on account of the method.

If you've ever seen Anakins implosion techniqe then this is very akin to that process.

Instead of using anakins dot technique I use pieces of millefiori and when pushed into the glass face of the maria, the end image of the millefiori is sealed in. Then I warm the millefiori and pull around 60% off with tweezers and add on top some varigated green yellow black stringer. Now its time to commence melting down from the edges of the maria "large nail like head" rotating in a largeish flame. Even the small torches should give enough heat to cause the edges to run inwards.

Last of all I pressed the base into frit to give the piece an appearance of plant life growing out of it..this looks like a well maintained flower bed.

If you want to, add a little more glass over the frit.
