That's all fine when it's your home, you can do what you like, my point is not so much safety (which of course is important!) it's more about insurance cover and this modern day culture of health and safety and liabilities, my caution is that you probably shouldn't introduce new gas operated appliances into a building without the prior permission of the owner.

It doesn't really matter whether they have their gas facts right or not, the insurance companies have the final say, and it's no good trying to get the money out of a student to rebuild a damaged property - they generally can't stump up that kind of cash!

Having said all that, I was thinking along the lines of a can of propane, however you could well be talking about Mapp gas, which if properly secured probably wouldn't freak out a landlord so much! I suggest you get one of those and show it to them when you ask permission.
