I do the same, but my inside rack sits directly on the floor. Is this wrong, should I be protecting it somehow?

£650+ for a new kiln or £5 for a tile, you do the maths,
having paid out a lot of money for it, it makes sense to protect your investment.
imho
Instead of getting married again, I'm going to find a woman I don't like and just give her a house.

Those pics are wonderful! Now I get it. It is so much easier when you can SEE what people mean. Will try the same set up as I have one of those ceramic shelves and can bend up a frame myself something like the one in the pic. Do your beads "float in space" or are they touching the rack in the kiln??
I'm really a Fiona, not a Betty the Chook.
It's just that I rather like hens
.... more than a bit actually

They float in space, Betty. But as they cool I shove them all over to one side to make room for more, usually holding the mandrels with pliers as they get pretty hot. I don't ever get any sticking together unless I put them in too hot.

I should have phrased that differently. I bought the rack to stop myself from gouging chunks out of the back, but how can I damage the base? I've got a tile, it came with one, but I thought that was for fusing or something, it gets in the way when I use the bead door.

Edit to add: OK I saw a flash of light last night, it's in case everything melts over the bottom if it gets too hot! I'll look out that shelf and stick it in.
