Can anyone show me a pic of what angle they hold their glass at when applying it to the mandrel?  I've seen some videos where the rod is held practically perpendicular to the mandrel (ie so the glass is flowing down onto the mandrel) but in Cindy Jenkins book she hold the rod below the mandrel for winding the glass on.

I just wonder if anyone can advise which way is best?  I've been trying with the rod perpendicular to the mandrel.

For me I'd say about 45 degrees.

She's made of real glass. She got real real emotion. But my heart laughs I have that same sweet devotion!

Yup, me too - and definitely with the rod above the mandrel!

I read that too in Cindy's book and tried putting the rod below the mandrel but it really didn't work for me :-\

As the guys said 45 degrees is a good guide. It should be at an angle that feels comfortable for you to apply the glass to the mandrel.

Enjoy!

Sometimes Igo straight down but 45 degrees is good long rods I rest on my shoulder ;D never wind up from below though! :)

Yep, I don't think it works to wind from below, but when I remove the rod from the gather on the mandrel, I often pull the rod down into the flame to cut it while lifting the mandrel upwards. So in that instance, you would see the rod below the mandrel, if only for a second or so.
