gas fired kiln

I wondered if anyone had any experience of gas fired kilns(propane).  I have been looking at one on an American site,
it seemed a very reasonable price and as I shall have limited supply of electricity (lighting only)in my new studio I thought maybe
this was the way to go.

When I first started I thought this then I found out that you have to have the most expensive type of gas fired kiln called a MUFFLE KILN which basically keeps the flame and fumes away from the glass or it discolours For the expense involved importing from America you could buy a hefty extension lead or simply plug your kiln in, in the garage or kitchen maybe?

I used a propane kiln when I was at college (around 20 years ago) and it was such a great kiln.  I was using it for small scale work and for slumping large glass bowls and it was faster and the results were more consistent compared with the electric kilns available then. 

At the moment I have an (electric) SC2 for annealing beads, enamelling and PMC work, and it plugs straight into the mains.  It is inexpensive to run and it is perfect for what I need right now.

You may be able to find a supplier in the UK for the kiln that you were looking at who can give you more advice and also a demo. I hope that you find the right kiln for what you need!
