Title: We Now have a Wiki
Post by: Dickie on November 10, 2008, 10:42:13 PM
For those of you who haven't been reading this thread (http://www.frit-happens.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=9215.0) we have decided to setup a Wiki...

Well.... here it is... I would like to unveil....

Fritipedia
(http://www.frit-happens.co.uk/w/skins/common/images/fhwikilogo.png) (http://www.frit-happens.co.uk/wiki/)

Bookmark it now...

OK.. There is not a lot of information on it at the moment... (well..nothing at all really ;) ) but that's where you lot come in. :)

We have decided for the time being that only those with more than 25 posts can edit the Wiki (rather than a free-for-all)... Please note: that this is not to say that anyone with less than 25 posts to their name does not have something useful to add to the global pool of information that is Fritipedia, but we wanted to try to reduce the risk of rogue members who registered on FH for spamming reasons from vandalising the Wiki.

We hope no-one is upset by this decision we can always review it again later.

To log in just use your Frit-Happens! User name and Password, and away you go.

We need some useful information for Newbies and the "not so newbies" like pages on Annealing, Kilns, Different types of glass, Suppliers, Kiln schedules, Photography, Photo editing, Websites, FAQs  etc. etc. the list is endless (to say the least)

So feel free to create your new pages.

Please bear in mind that Fritipedia will be moderated and what you type may be edited... (in fact it's quite likely to be edited.. that's how a Wiki works)

Also please read the Disclaimer (http://www.frit-happens.co.uk/wiki/Fritipedia:General_disclaimer) (this is very important.)

Above all we would like Fritipedia to be something that is both useful and enjoyable.

If you need to learn how to edit a Wiki then there are some good articles
Here  (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Contents)and here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_to_edit)

Please let me know if you encounter any issues.

Enjoy !!!  :D

I was going to make a start, and suddenly I've gone all shy, lol! I was trying to find an index page (zoho wiki, which I use, has that feature), which might be useful, but couldn't find one?! Anyways, I figured out how to add pages, so once I've had a clever thought, there'll be no stopping me! Well done Dickie!

Okay, me again, what do we do about stuff that somebody has gone through a lot of trouble putting together - I just took the Shards info from a post Becky did, but attributed & linked to her site - is that okay?

http://www.frit-happens.co.uk/wiki/Shards

Btw, if anybody wantes to get started, I purposely left a blank under 'Using Shards', so it's not as scary as adding a new page ;))

I'm sure I'm being thick cos I really don't know how to use a Wiki - but when I click Dickie's link to the main page, I can't work out how to get to what Sabine has added .... can somebody point me in the right direction please?!

Hi Julie,

that's what I meant about a site index :( It's not on the home page - you've got to either know it's there, or search for it - I've put the two links up I've added to
http://www.frit-happens.co.uk/wiki/Shards
http://www.frit-happens.co.uk/wiki/Cleaning_Beads

Try going to the first one. In order to edit, you'll need to log in with your FHF user name and password. Then, on the Shard page, click Edit.

Actually, Dickie, hope you don't mind, I put up a 'Sandpit' page for people to play with, Julie, it's here:

http://www.frit-happens.co.uk/wiki/Sandpit

....and I've also linked it through from the Main Page :) :)

Hope that helps? Enjoy!

Given how few of you have logged in... and how even less of you (one) have actually written anything, I have to wonder if you are all just stunned.... confused... or just plain don't know what to write.

I would really suggest reading the pages on
Editing (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Editing_pages)
Creating a New Page (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Starting_a_new_page)

Once you are logged in, at the top of any editable page you will find a selection of tabs, that allow you to (depending on your rights) Discussion/Edit/View source/History of any page.

These are basically your tools to allow you to write and manage your pages.

Writing an page is really easy. The rule is.. don't worry about all the difficult things like formatting or links to start with, someone can always come in and sort these out for you... as the Wiki help says

QuoteThe number one rule of wiki editing, is to be bold. Dive in and make changes. Other people can correct mistakes later, so have confidence, and give it a try! There can be all kinds of editing conventions, rules, and philosophy governing the editing of wiki pages, but the "be bold" rule overrides these!

Although I said, don't worry about formatting, there are a few things that are useful to remember
If you want to create a heading use the '=' sign twice before and after the heading... this actually makes it look a bit like a heading anyway.

e.g
== My Heading ==
Some text here

Each page actually has two parts to it.. the Main content, that people see as the page, and a discussion where you can discuss what should go there this is a really useful section.

Anyway, please don't be afraid to write anything... you can NEVER completely destroy anything, as all edits can be undone if necessary.

One final thing... While getting used to things I suggest using the "Show preview" button rather than committing (Saving) every edit you make, as it is easy to make a mistake, and although all mistakes can be corrected, it just adds to the editing history, and makes it messy !!

Anyway, just get in there and start writing.

Dickie, I still don't know how to go from the main page to, for example, the pages that Sabine wrote this morning - how do you find them?

::)
Title: Re: We Now have a Wiki
Post by: Dickie on November 12, 2008, 12:31:50 AM
You need to search... as more stuff is added the link structure will build up. But in the mean time we need to add a contents page, that lists the pages.
You can look under the "Special Pages (http://www.frit-happens.co.uk/wiki/Special:SpecialPages)" section for lots of links to various views.

All pages can be seen here

Julie, it'll search for both page titles and content, just like a search in the forum. Have a play to see just how manu dumb words I've written....."bead" will obviously get you somewhere, "hollow" would too......and I believe you might even get a hit on "flowerpot" ;)

Ah.  The search is very specific though - I tried "shard" and got nothing, but found your article with "shards"  ::)

That's interesting Julie, and slightly annoying (I share an office with an information specialist, it rubs off). I wonder if you can change the search parameters....). Go on Julie, play in the sandpit, you know you want to!

I hope it is not to scary!!! just one of those things I am "hot" on! I am a chemo nurse by trade and teach people how to give it to cancer patients. I could teach a monkey how to give the drugs but experts need to undersatnd the finer points!!! Does that make sense! I am not suggesting any monkey could make a bead but everyone does need to be aware of the risks to health! Right i am off my soapbox now! going to do more editing!!!

Another tip...
If you are editing a page that has a lot of content, it is very worthwhile clicking on the edit links next to each section, as if you edit the whole page, no only does it take longer to save, but someone might be editing a different section of the same page, and then when you come to save you will need to resolve the conflict.

Please can we not use "top level headings" in posts. That's headings using one = sign
As these are reserved for the main title
All sub headings in posts should be at least 2 =

E.g.
== My New Heading ==

Sorry, but there are reasons for this... (I have gone though and changed all the ones I could find)

For anyone wanted to see what pages need writing so far... have a look here

All these pages are linked from other content but are yet to be written... I'm sure some of you can fill this in! ;)

Hi Administrators!

After adding some more information to the page of EDP I got the folowing reply instead of an improved article:
QuoteDatabase error
A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:

   (SQL query hidden)

from within function "Revision::insertOn". MySQL returned error "1048: Column 'old_text' cannot be null (localhost)".

Is that the reason for having no edits in the last years? The last successfull edit was 9 April 2013 in "Kiln".
I would like to share my experiance with all beadmakers by updating the WIKI.

Greathings from Germany
Dietmar

EDIT: I've been able to post an edit in a section of the sandpit. But an edit of the whole page was rejected with the feedback as quoted abouve. The preview of the sandpit (whole page AND section) was not availlable.

EDIT II: I wanted to try to create a new page from a wantedpage. I was logged out by the system and tried to log in, again. REJECTED.
QuoteLogin error Fritipedia uses cookies to log in users. You have cookies disabled. Please enable them and try again.
What the ??? did I do wrong with a firefox-browser?
Was it my fault or did the WIKI -not- write the cookies?
Why could I log in the first time and edit at least one section of the sandpit?
Why does the FH-cookie work perfectly on my computer and the frittipedia-cookie doesn't?

Unfortunately it looks like an incompatibility between the MediaWiki software and the version of PHP we are using.
I'm not sure when I will be able to look into this, as it could be quite involved.

Sorry, but don't hold your breath ;)

In terms of the logging in issues, try clearing the cookies for the domain frit-happens.co.uk, as I successfully logged in and changed the sandbox page.

Hi Y'all!

Where is the content of the WIKI gone?  ???
It doesn't matter which topic I open, all have the same content: NONE. :o

Is it gone or are there still traces left exept for searching the WAY-BACK-MACHINE...? :(

It wold be sad if we'ce lost all that valuable information. :'(
Is there a chance to get logged in and maybe getting rights as an administrator? I would like to help keeping the information for the future and adding my knowledge.

The Wiki was a a lovely idea, but new readers can find a wealth of valuable info by simply simply searching the FH forum. I found this indispensible when I was learning.

Sadly now the forum is so little used, it may be too much work to keep the Wiki active as well.
