Hi folks! I'm generally a lurker not a poster, but I'm finally in the process of setting up my Shedio (Squee!) so hopefully I will be soon be able to practise the techniques I learnt with Jennie Lamb last year and have some shiny pictures to share :D
In the meantime I am interested in how you have set up your ventilation - I have a tuffnells kit sitting on my bench and a dilemma of 1) overhead or 2) behind the torch for the capture hood. I reckon the former would be better for capturing the hot gases, but might get too hot and melt the ducting! On the other hand I'm worried that behind the torch might not capture well enough, although it obviously won't get as hot. I've had a look through the threads on this board and it seems that most people go for behind?
I'd be very grateful if you could share how you position the capture hood and any pitfalls you have found with that positioning

I reckon that directly above would be best, but I couldn't figure out how to set that up, so it's ahead, but on a stand to make it higher than the flame, and angled to meet the flame. (Held by a lab retort stand,which is standing on a box). The rim of the hood gets a bit warm, but not worringly so. Suggest you set it up and just feel the temp of the diiferent bits. make something smoky - and watch where the smoke goes.
I've got mine hanging off a chain from the ceiling - held an incense stick by the torch and found the best place for the funnel - but if I turn the torch up at all the motor starts making a nasty noise. I think I'll have to adjust the chain to make it higher.

I'm going for the chain hanging option either way I think as conveniently the torch is dead underneath the apex of the roof so it'll be easy to put hooks in the battens and it keeps my table space clearer.
Nick, roughly how high above your torch do you have the hood? - would give me a good starting point to mess about with. HSE guidance for capture hoods is about 1 hood diameter from the source, but I think that might be a bit close!
I don't have the set from tuffnells, but I have my pipe attached with drainpipe fixings (They are grey and screw to the wall either side of the pipe). I had to move my fan further away as I managed to melt it... I have mine above but at a 45' angle so it get as much of the fumes as it can. xx
