Title: cutting circles
Post by: shafeenan on February 02, 2015, 08:22:02 AM
has anyone tried something like this on bullseye?  I did ask them if it would cut bullseye but they said they didn't know. it is made for cutting sheet glass. does anyone know if sheet glass is tougher or softer or what?  THANKS. It seems like a deal compared with some of the specific fused glass cutting tools I've seen for a similar job....

I use a Silberschnitt one ( http://www.warm-glass.co.uk/silberschnitt-pro-circle-cutter-p-1209.html) very similar to this to cut all types of glass including Bullseye.

Forget who told me a few weeks back when I was looking at this, but they said the cheapy ones are just as good.  There are a lot on Amazon, somehow I have more confidence with Amazon than Ebay these days.  I've got this one now because it cuts smaller circles, from someone selling here http://www.warm-glass.co.uk/easycut-glass-circle-cutter-p-1211.html although I'm needing more practice after a bit of beginner's luck ;)

I use the same one that Sue has.  I did have one like that one on eBay but after a couple of uses the plastic that the ball bit screws into broke, so it was useless.  The Silberschnitt cutter has metal there so should be more durable.

Thanks everyone - might have to rethink this as I don't think I could ever need enough discs to make £50+ a possibility - I'll still be paying back for the kiln for years yet!

I use the Silberschnitt that I bouight from Warm Glass - superb piece of kit and very easy to use.

It does appear to be much cheaper on Amazon (£43) and they do occasionally come up on Ebay at silly prices (£20)

I worked on the principle that getting a clean cut on a large sheet of glass was a sensible investment rather than breaking a few every so often.

To answer your original question, sheet glass is much smoother than bullseye glass, and I would think that window glass is probably thinner. As Mark says, breaking a piece of glass is expensive!

Float (window glass) is quite often 4mm, green house glass is usually 3mm, Bullseye is either 3 or 2mm, so standard float is actually thicker (but as you say, much smoother)
