I'm contemplating putting in some dedicated extraction for my kiln (which is in my kitchen - hobby fuser) ... would a second cooker hood installed above the kiln be OK, or should I be looking for something more specialist?

Am sure it would probably work OK for a kiln, but I used a cooker hood when I first started torching and fried it in a few weeks! The fan couldn't take the constant heat I was throwing at it.

I guess it depends on how close to the kiln you're putting the hood, but allowing for lid clearance, there'd be virtually nothing heat-wise reaching the hood. Heat from a torch is much greater, 1300 C for starters, and exposed.
I take it you're firing stuff that needs venting, Jane? Wouldn't a normal extractor fan pull any fumes out? Mind you, a cooker hood is sometimes as easy to fit, I guess.

Am doing more "fossil vitra and stuff, and realised that as the current cooker hood is on the opposite side of the kitchen, the surfaces in the middle are starting to get a bit mucky ...
Also it's making sure I time firings for between meals so I'm not trying to cook when the kiln paper is burning off!
I could try a standard extractor fan over this side, then upgrade to something heavier duty if required... might ask my friendly electrician!
8ft ceiling, hobbyfuser on official stand, so plenty of clearance. Also up corner in alcove (with appropriate clearance round kiln) so should be easy to pull the fumes in.
