Title: Advice which round mould to buy
Post by: Lush! on June 02, 2014, 09:04:31 AM
I have a Skutt firebox 14 and want to get the biggest round mould I can for it, like a big fruit bowl.  The chamber is 36cm.

I have this one http://www.warm-glass.co.uk/mould-8123-medium-classic-30cm-diameter-x-8cm-p-2679.html but it's a bit deep.

I think this is probably the shape I'm after, http://www.warm-glass.co.uk/mould-8134-spherical-bowl-28cm-diameter-x-7cm-p-391.html but I'm not sure that 28cm is big enough (I already have the 20cm version).  The next size up though is 42cm, too big for my kiln.

Any ideas folks?

Also, does anybody have any used moulds for sale?

I can't offer advice, as I've only just got a larger kiln, but I would also be interested in used moulds, after you, of course.  I have a Paragon Fusion 10, and it will take (I think) up to 52 cm, so I could use larger moulds.  The trouble is, having spent out on the kiln, I now can't afford to buy new moulds for it!

I agree, that is a nicer shape.

Julie, check Creative Glass Shop, I think they have a larger choice of moulds as it is their sister company, Creative Ceramics that make a lot of them.

(Creative Ceramics also have a site, but I am not sure if they will send to UK and how much it'd cost anyway)

Don't forget that as with all moulds, if it's deeper than you want in profile, then you can make a blank that is smaller than the top diameter and still fire it for the slump on a lower point of the mould to get a shallower profile.

Most of the moulds on our site also say which of our kilns (including the Firebox 14 kiln) they fit into.
