Title: Lead came query
Post by: Sandera on February 09, 2013, 07:27:02 PM
Hi folks.

This is a bit of a long shot so if anyone can help I'd be over the moon. I've created a round flat fused glass piece (6mm) and want to use c came to surround it prior to hanging. Does anyone know whether it's possible to purchase came that would take this width and where? I've had a look but haven't discovered a supplier so far.

Keeping fingers crossed!

There's this, http://www.pearsonsglass.com/p771/Heaps--Capping-C-6mm--Individual-Lead-Came/product_info.html     but not sure if the 6mm refers to heart or total width. You'd have to ask them.  When I've made a piece, I've displayed it on one of those plastic plate stands, http://www.sallys-superstore.co.uk/Pages/default.aspx   Scroll down for pictures. I've also seen adverts for welded stands with a semicircular base into which a circular piece of glass fits but I think these were in USA. Have a look at http://www.sundanceglass.com/fused-slumped-glass-display-stand-garden.htm

Thanks Pat.

I've emailed Pearsons as I'm a bit flummoxed re what the dimensions are as well so hopefully I'll hear from them tomorrow. I think this piece will definitely be better as a piece that's hung in a window. If only I had had the foresight to have included copper rings for hanging at the fusing stage - but hey ho - you live and learn.

Hi Sandera,
If Pearsons can't help you then you could ask Creative Glass Guild, Bristol,  ( http://www.creativeglassguild.co.uk/  )  they are very helpful and stock all manner of stained glass related stuff.  I have had C came from them in the past but can't remember how high it is.

They do all sizes in lead, also zinc edging came.

Kansa sell C came too, but you could always use copper tape to edge it like for Tiffany and the just tin it and solder on a hanger.

Yes I did consider that, Glyn, but the piece is quite big (about 25cm diameter) and I wasn't sure that copper foiling would support it as it's pretty heavy. It would break my heart if it collapsed as I spent quite some time on it!
