Title: Ccoollddd bbrrrrrr
Post by: Beansprout on November 06, 2012, 02:27:01 PM
My little HH is struggling in the cold mornings. I'm in a large uninsulated shed. It took me 15 mins to make a simple small/meduim sized bead...

Is anyone else struggling? HH or not? :D

I'm a wimp - I'm not even attempting going up to the workshop!

I've just labelled up all the glass I brough home with me from Tuffies at the weekend, so I'm itching to start torching, however, my ventilation kit has to be fed out of the window, and I can't say I'm looking forward to opening that window.

Shall I put on a fleece and start, or not?   :-\

Fleece, hat and scarf and off you go and don't forget to show us what you make - did you get any of the new CIM glass ?

Well, Lynny...time ran away with me and O/H is home soon, and he will moan like hell if I open the window.

I torch at one end of my lounge, so the scarf and hat wont be needed, but I'm certainly having to 'fleece up' these days, during winter torching.

The only new C.I.M. I fancied was the Key Lime. Fortunately, I bought some Thistledown last time but didn't get to use it yet. I bought a couple of packs of Key Lime, but my main buying was geared toward colours to help with the things I learned at the weekend up at Tuffies with Amanda Muddimer (Mango Beads).

I bought a load back with me but when I looked on my stock list yesterday, I decided to buy some more Eggplant and Great Bluedini (now it's back in) and some Effertre Specials.

Silversmithing tomorrow, so it now looks like Thursday torching for me, hopefully.

Ah well all the best laids plans and all that !
I've not been in my shedio for a few weeks now :( and expect it will be very cold in there judging by the frost on the windows this morning.
I was quite fancying the look of Key Lime as well as I don't have many greens and it does look nice.
Have fun silversmithing tomorrow !

Lol, I can't afford not to torch, but it *is* freezing! Two heaters on, but still can't feel my hands after a couple of hours!

It wasn't too bad in my workshop, but it is insulated.  I've got an electric heater in there to keep the chill off, and, if it's very cold and I'm going to be out there for long, there's a small woodburner.  Out there for about 2 hours, only made 6 beads - fairly large, and I'm not that good yet, so I can't work very quickly.  I think one might be nice, but have no idea about the others - opening the kiln will tell!  I tried the Galaxy Bead tutorial for the 3rd time (first time - grotty grey, second time - slightly bluer grotty grey) I think this time it will be, again, slightly bluer grotty grey!  By about the 50th try, I might get something like it's supposed to look.

I've made one half of a pair of woolen handwarmer type things... they are very warm, and have just enough room for thumb manoeuvres  :D When Shedding, I also don my Rab Down Jacket, Thermals (I may make that two pairs of thermal trousers tomorrow), and super thick socks. I've got a tiny little blow heater but it's awkward to position... I don't want propane flame all over my direction if it is pointed at me!

Poor little suffering, even his flame is a little blue. hurhurhrur

I think I may join you, Linda.  The third one was even worse than the first one, and it looked so blue while I was reducing it  :'( :'( :'(  I was sure I'd got it a bit better, until I opened the kiln.  I'd love to know why the silver foil goes to grey sludge  ???.

After beading in a very draughty shed, I made sure that Lamp Lodge was very well insulated!

Too much propane perhaps?

Would that do it?  Should I not reduce it so much?  The tutorial says to reduce it till it's shiny all over, with colour like oil on water, but it never gets like that with me.  The silver stays on the surface, goes shiny, and, while I'm reducing, the red glass goes (mostly) blue, like it should.  Then I waft it in the neutral flame while heating up the clear for encasing (like it says), and it doesn't look much different.  Then, after I've encased, the silver stays and goes greyish brown, and the red goes back to being red!  Surely the silver should disappear except for turning the stars gold, and turning the red to blue.

Lucky you ended up with red!

My effort resulted in what can only be described as a clear encased 'richard'*

:D :D :D There's only a little bit of red showing through the poo coloured sludge, just enough to make it look even worse!  If it was blue underneath one could at least pretend it was clouds over the night sky, or something  :)

I got a piece of thick perspex the same size as the shed window, cut a hole in it the same size as the ventilation tube. Swapped the glass shed window for the perspex window. Once fitted I threaded the vent tube through the hole in the perspex and sealed it with tape. Fantastic ventilation, no draft, job done. Before that when I torched in the conservatory I fed the vent tube through the open window and filled the remaining gap with a large piece of cardboard cut to fill the hole. I covered the cardboard in cling film to keep it dry if it rained.

Hope this gives food for thought.

i kind of have the opposite problem of being too cold whilst making glass :/

Our furnace door doesnt shut and the glory holes are not very well insulated which makes a toasty warm working environment.
Its a really surreal feeling melting inside whilst its snowing outside, in through the window and onto your piece of glass lol.

But hey back to the torch this weekend, :D

Nick....I can't say I would consider replacing the Everest Double Glazing with perspex in one kitchen window, but I get your drift  ;D

I may have to think seriously about the cardboard with the cut out hole, though. I refuse to allow the weather to curtail my glassy stuff.

Hello,
sorry for you all that it is to cold to torch. I'm in my house so not for me, and  I am never cold that's a help. But please keep in mind that fleece is made from plastic, so if anything goes wrong it Will not burn but meld ( on to your skin). Good luck!

I have some lovely pin hole marks in some of my favorite fleeces from wearing them when torching :(  Learned my lesson now have 2 fleeces underneath a painters smock (cotton), plus thermal booties etc etc etc (not under my fleeces you understand  ::) ;D).

Oohh very jealous.... I miss my Uni hot glass studio in the winter... I could have set up a little carpet and armchair and had a nap every day in there!

hehe i so want to do this, but my tech would so drop h+s on me lol
it makes me giggle when people who know we are here come in, shivering, stand by the furnace for 5 and then leave again not shivering :)

I put my ventilation out the window but I have cut a piece of cardboard to fit the window and thread the pipe out through that. The window is open but the cardboard is a very snug fit I don't get any draughts!!

Yeap, I am on a HH in my Shedio and it struggled the other day while I was trying. Though it was just me being a newbie though but will see if the same thing happens again.

I used cardboard for a while, but found that it sometimes came adrift. So now I have a piece of the foam used for camping sleepmats, cut just a bit bigger than the window, velcro-ed to the frame, with slashes cut into it to make a tight fit round the extraction pipe. At the end of the session, I undo it, remove the pipe and close the window.
