The colour of the month challenge is jointly sponsored by Off Mandrel (thank you Sean and Gillian!) and Frit Happens!
Each month the lucky winner, chosen by a random number selector, will receive a £20 gift voucher to spend on-line with Off Mandrel. The draw will take place at the end of JUNE so make sure you get your entries in to be in with a chance to win the goodies!
A reminder that the entries should be new work.
So, the colour for the month for MAY/JUNE 2012 is REICHENBACH IRIS ORANGE (RAKU). Come on let's see your creations!
Good luck!
Kazx
Will raku frit count or only by the rod?
I hope the frit! I've a big pot of Kaz's raku frit that came in one of the boxes of goodies I bought when some people decided to give up lampworking - and if things don't go poo on me, I think I might have colours :) :) :)
I have one rod of this......i will try :)
Rod, frit, powder - whatever you have!
Kazx
I had a brave go earlier with stringer from the rod... looked fairly pooish when it went in the kiln - I only seem to get colours from the frit. Still nonetheless I shall valiantly show my effort for all to chuckle at when it's done!
Could someone kindly remind me of the best way to treat raku frit? Is it get it really hot, then blow on it? ???
Thank you!
Ooops, added to basket..... ;D
Blowing on it seems to be the secret, and whacking it around a bit seemed to help. Well, I had colour going into the kiln so hopeful of colour coming out. This will be a first - tried some iris gold frit and it didn't work so put that away and went back to the iris orange whilst I was on a high :)
I saw the colour, honest. Before I encased it was dark brown with highlights of dark blue/purple. Then I slapped some clear over it (with other strikers that I've played with that's what has done it), unfortunately although I have lots of colours they're pretty pale. The 'flowers' kept their colour though.

So then I made a button! Much better, no blowing, but lots of layers so in and out of the flame, but didn't get too dripping.

Great. I bought a fresh batch of rods AND powder today.
Great button Helen!
I've had a play today - Kev said who are you waving at (I sit at our dining room window to torch) no one said I, just cooling me frit! ;D
First couple out of the kiln this morning, I'm quite pleased with these :) Wish I could get those lavenders and pinks though.

I only had a teeny thin rod to play with, so just one lentil from me (front and back).... a slight hint of blue in places, but not much!

What does the rod look like? I've a lot of beige rods with no labels. Has it a core of a different colour, any distinguishing features?
Mine is so thin it's hard to tell, but it just looks beige. After you've used it the end turns brown.
yes, just beige really, sometimes a bit streaky, sometimes circular pattern of darker & lighter when you look at the end, but all opaque.
there were some rods of multicolour that look very similar to raku on the outside, but have a transparenty green core, and are green on the end after you've melted them.
I can't get nothing but poo out of it so i etched it and stamped it

Jo, that bead is gorgeous! Sandy, love those beads - have a very similar set in my shop, but thought I should make something new for the challenge, which frankly was nowhere near as nice!
Or it can be described as looking just like multicolour (not dark)
Love that bead Jo :)

Which I think I have ..................
Some of the mystery rods are green ends, some brown ::) and some have a transparent core. Will go and have a look and see if I can find a name for any of them. Thanks.
I love that bead Jo, very pretty colours.
Thank you all ;D
I still can't reduce this pic, so hopefully an admin can chop it for me, please:

Ok ordered the right glass now to sit patiently til it gets here
Linda that is a lovely :)
Don't re-size it its lovely Linda. And the others are all wonderful too. I love the etched, stamped one such subtle colours, looks like savannah grass.
I have had a go but couldn't do anything thing with my one rod of glass, so I tortured it instead and although they don't look at all raku they are unusual and I do like them. Have to take some pictures after I have cleaned up my light tent. Its covered in dust after our ceiling collapsed on Monday....long story!
Huge lumps of frit!

This is the other one I was mean to. Good job I'm not going on Di's course. Do you think this is maybe going a little too far?
na, I love the organic nature of these two.
I think they are fab, so different and the texture on them is genius.
They are organically/orgasmically gorgeous ;D

Been at the bicarb again, Julia? They're lovely, as are all up so far! I can't do anything with this colour, but I WILL!!!!!!!! I hope. PPP

Yes Nick, I was addicted to bicarb before Julie's class, and she only renewed my desire to experiment with it further.
Reminds me of when my sister put a dish of bicarb in the fridge in the flat she shared, to absorb the smells. the lads coming back from the club later that night thought it was there lucky day. Don't think they tried to snort it though. Can't imagine what the effect would of been if they had.
Tomcat those look lovely, very unusual swirls of colour, love those snails too.
Lovely beads from everyone but I just love those snails Fabienne! :D
Lovely beads so far everyone but can I just add my name to the list who love 'poo' ;D
This set are due to be made into a bracelet which I'm showing to a new gallery, I think I'm going to etch them.

No such word as 'awful' on here, just 'organic' or 'freeform'. Come and show, heaven knows I've shown some pretty strange beads in the past. Someone might be able to tell you why you aren't getting the effect you want :) :)
ok so here we go then
1st i just melted and shaped
(http://i402.photobucket.com/albums/pp103/littlewib/005-9.jpg)
2nd and 3rd and 4th i did the striking and reducing and reduced with decoration in that order

then i reduced and encased

I see what you mean Tish, They are not the most pleasing of beads. your first 2 are exactly what I got too on my first bead. Which is why I sprinkled it in sodium bicarbonate and heated it till it screamed for mercy. The second one I just started the bicarb straight off so its not heated in quite so much and it does seem to have a little more colour. I think reducing isn't helpful with raku, seems to make them look burnt. I thought encasing was meant to help though.
I do hope some one comes along soon to tell us what we are doing wrong.
snap id just like to know where the orange is and what colours im meant to be looking for lol as so many different colours are appearing in other ppls beads but noone has said whats right lol
I think with Raku its rapid heating and cooling, or at least that's what you need to do when you are doing a ceramic raku firing. So have you guys tired heading it until its so melty that it's clear and then using a cold tool on it? I think you might need to do it a few times.
The idea is that you get lots of colours from it not just the one, so lots of layer should give you a wider selection as the different layers of glass will have been heated and cooled a different number of time.
** I HAVE NOT MADE THESE BEADS - MADE BY SOME ONE ELSE**

See how this person has got different colours. You could try encasing the raku to see if that does anything
anybody want the rest of my raku i dont like glass that cannt mk up its mind what colour it is will swap for tangerine sparkle or clio or other glass
This has raku twistie wrapped around the middle, I really like the different /unexpected colours you get from it.

There is a huge thread about this on LE. Basically, what has been said is that frit is great or the lower COE rods. 104 in the rod doesn't work so well. So you need to keep it for decoration only - ideally, heat to white, wave it around, marver it on brass (this is what helps bring out the colours) and encase.
I use rods for murrini, and for dots etc and get nice results.
Love those colours Yellow Friend, great example of what you can get out of Raku! ;D
Crap photie but......
After years of poo,
I got colour from Raku.....

I rather like raku frit and its earthy base colour with dashes of other unexpected accents :) Maybe I'm just a bit odd but I keep looking for glass and frit colours that will end up looking a bit like rocks with moss or lichen, and raku is perfect for that! I love those lentils, Gaysie May, and your barrel, Lotti :) That's just the kind of colours and textures I'm talking about!
I've been playing a bit myself too, photos will come once I've managed to do what I wanted to. The raku frit behaves more or less like I expect, I just keep having bad ideas and messing up the beads in other ways ::)
Thanks Noora, I like the barrel too, might be a keeper, need something earthy. It was over reichenbach dark silver brown which I have just rediscovered in my stash and been using ALOT! :)

The bead is a black base, 104 raku and clear stringer. The topper is black with two sizes of raku frit. The larger frit is going slightly to green and blue at the edges.
Lotto i love your bead. I'm glad this challenge runs into June, I'm off to my shed to get out my raku frit after seeing that one.
I am very raku challenged :-\ I've pretty much accepted that I'll never get amazing colours out of it, so I just pretend it's supposed to come out beigy brown with the tiniest hint of colour and call it organic! This is just cobalt with two sizes of raku frit :)

And I meant to say that I love ALL the beads in this thread...you've just got to love the way that there are so many different things you can do with just one colour :)
There's too much too mention, but well done for so many getting colour out of Iris Orange. I especially like Linda's, Lottis, Gay's and Kat's reactions.
I combined it with a first time play with a big hole mandrel I bought at Flame Off. this is Iris Orange and Copper Green.

I think this is lovely as it is Spexy :)
There are some amazing things in this thread. A really good challenge. Spexy, Have you thought of trying the trick I saw mentioned some where of putting it in the freezer for a bit and taking it out and breathing on it? It should acquire a layer of condensation that makes it look a little like it is etched and will give you an idea if you like it or not. I have never tried this myself, I just bung all the beads I'm not sure about into my tumbler and see what happens! lol
I found two rods among my stash, a rod of old stuff which I thought might be the 96 coe and one rod of 104 coe.
I made spacers out of the 96...
and encased the 104....

Although, I did make 24 beads and only 11 survived. Not too pleased to say the least, would have made a great set :) So, I guess it isn't too keen on being encased. I will be hanging onto them to check the rest don't crack.

What beautiful beads you're all making! I still haven't finished experimenting, but I want to show what I've made so far :) This is going to be a bit of a hog, sorry about that. There's just so much you can do with iris orange ;D
The first photo shows cabs and a bead with frit. I guess this is why it is called "raku", the bead looks a bit like some raku fired ceramics. The dots are raku too and it's slightly reduced to bring out the luster.
Winding it up layer by layer into a spacer produces colours. For one of these beads I made a cane half black, half iris orange. The other is plan iris orange.
I also tried making murrini with iris orange, black and clear. I'm no good at making murrini and obviously even less good at applying it, but it did bring out some more colours.
In the last photo I tried a variation of the storming technique, which brings out a whole rainbow of colours.
Sorry about the bead release on some of the beads.

Been playing a bit with Raku and starting to get the results I wanted - apart from the errant air bubbles ;)

Here are my raku beads on CiM maple:

Lovely, lovely beads people! I haven't had any time to torch recently but seeing all these makes me feel I need to find the time :)
Sadly the raku on this heart didn't produce the most amazing colours but, inspite of that, I quite like the colour combination and have just sent this bead off to Shirl's bead swap. The base glass is Larkspur.

Ciel I love those beads !! and Lilley that heart is really pretty :)
My final entry. I did what everyone has suggested, I blew on it, I reduced it (didn't know it was meant to reduce as well as strike), then encased it (I need to encase to magnify all those gorgeous colours).....
And I got GREY!!!!!!!

I think I'll stick to just using it on the outside of the bead.
Don't reduce! It just goes metallic grey? It's a striker - heat, cool, heat, cool and so on!
Yeah, but doing that all I get is pastel shades, I wanted something darker, more like I get without encasing, so I thought I'd try. Though I could make a few more and put them on Ebay as '50 shades of grey'. ::) ::) :D :D
I am adding these here because I wanted to show what Diane Cook has done with iris orange - no tricks just striking and encasing and to enter her in the draw!!!

Have you tried encasing at the first strike, when they're dark brown? Might get brighter colours that way?
Those beads by Diane are lovely.
Look what happens when my back is turned ::)
Thanks Kaz
Wow Diane, they are amazing!! Having totally missed this thread, I'll put in some old ones, if it doesn't count don't enter me in the draw Kaz x

Yep, they're dark brown when I encase and pastel colours when they come out of the kiln. But the bit that sticks out the end of the encasing if I don't get all the way to the mandrel comes out dark brown. Maybe I should play with different clears to see if that makes a difference.
Last minute entry. ;D

oooo, I love those birdies ;D
Thanks Donna ;D
I love all the different effects everyone is getting out of this glass!
particularly like Lotti's spotty tube and the Colours Tina got out of it on the ginger!
and Helens discs, and the encased ones (I dont do well encasing it! dont think it likes me!)
Donna I dont know how you managed to get such pretty blues out of it, I usually just manage the odd streak of blue amid brown beige!
therefore I sculpt in it, things that don't matter if they come out brown, like bunnies, and now birdies!
Whoops I made these beads in May and forgot to put them on here. Apologies if it's too late!!

edited to reduce the size of the picture (I hope).
It may be too late, but what the heck, I'm here now.
I just can't get anything other than rust.
