Title: sticking glass panels to window ...how to ?
Post by: sarah t on February 01, 2012, 11:23:10 PM
i have treated myself to three fused glass panels for my new windows and now i am not sure how to attach them to the window

some one said clear sealent  (used for fish tanks) would this would be heavy duty enough ?.... the panels are 16 x 24 inch and pretty heavy but the light needs to come through without blooby bits of glue showing and drilling holes is not an option

any ideas /suggestions

What sort of windows are they going on (a larger pane, will they be opening, etc) , what positioning within the window (how high) etc - are the panels framed/edged?

There are UV curing glues which require, well UV or sunlight to cure, so only work with transparent or translucent glass - never tried it though as usually I want to glue something opaque!

Not sure I'd use fishtank sealant a window, as sunlight may degrade the glue over time?

Clear silicone around the edge  ;) Just make a frame of some sort to hold it in place for a few days till it sets. If you  ever want to move it just run a knife around the edge  ;D

they are three windows which dont open ,the fused panels are not edged as the window frame makes the frame ,  clear silicone sounds good emma thanks for that ...now to work out some kind of holding frame

If you look at things like No More Nails, they do a weather proof silicone sealant I think, extremely strong but resistant to the effects of heat....

If they go right up to the edge of the window frame, could you use duck tape to hold them in place whilst the silicone sets...?

The other option if you didn't want to fix them permanently to the window, but this depends on what your frames are made of I guess, but some sort of beading top and bottom with a channel (like a sliding wardrobe) and slot the panel in, easily removable then....
