That is absolute genius, I have so many friends who only wear studs, and it's always been a glue on cab up to now  ;D  Off to spend some cash!

Can't seem to place an order?  It keeps removing items from the cart when I check out.  Are you out of stock already?  :(

Umm... I don't understand why the shipping is so high - 50 pairs can't possibly weigh 1 kilo, which is 14.50 euros and the only shipping option available :o :o

I'm guessing up to 1 kilo may be what they have as the smallest postage band?

Fiona, I want some things too - anyone interested in a combined order to save shipping?

Hi everybody!
Thanks for your interest!
The problem with the Austrian Post Office is, that as soon as an envelope is thicker than 2cm, they charge the price that ist up to 1 kg. We are checking alternative options for sending studs only at the moment, I will post again as soon as I know (should be tomorrow). But as soon as you order some frit, too, the postage will be that high, I am sorry.

Ah, and for those of you who ordered already: We will send with the cheapest possibility and reimburse the difference. Would you prefer registered mail (ca. EUR 7,-) or non-registered (ca. EUR 4,-)?

I'm happy to go with a combined order - or is the Eur 4, now sorted?  I only want to try a few pairs initially.  If anyone's doing a combined order let me know?

Im a little confused, not unusual with me  ;D  Am I right in thinking that the postage is now 4 Euros non registered mail, just for studs ?
Title: Re: lampworked earstuds - video tutorial
Post by: afina on January 02, 2012, 12:59:50 PM
I am the source of confusion! Sorry!
As far as we learned via telephone, postage should be EUR 4,- non registered just for studs. But we will know for sure only when we post the mail at the post office - maybe that is different in the UK, but here you can never be sure if an information via phone is correct...
So, everybody who already ordered and payed more postage will get the difference to the real costs (plus a little for packing) reimbursed.

Those are the clips I have Julie, I did find them too small for a 2.4mm mandrel and slightly too big for a 2mm mandrel so i ended up taping mine on after  crimping it down.

Ordered my studs, one of the shops i stock got excited about the idea of studs so can't wait to get cracking and playing with design ideas.

Did you buy your clips from the same listing, Scarlet?  Mine fit perfectly on a 4mm mandrel, just enough tension to stay put and slide off easily.

I've had mine ages julie, just got them in the local market.

Odd as they have the same number of teeth and the larger ones tend to have more teeth, maybe mine have different bits on the end.

As I was asked in a german forum whether or not to put the croc clips in the kiln too: no. This will ruin the spring in the clip quickly.

He won't combine postage though if you order more than one set (which I did) which seemed a bit daft as he ended up sending them out in sperate envelopes with more postage and costs.  I've 3.2 mandrels so will get creative getting these to stay on. Somehow.

Hope i'm not asking the obvious....but after watching the video a couple of times, can anyone tell me what the 2 bits of thick stringer were for?  they weren't used, was it just an alternative to the glass bits?
Title: Re: lampworked earstuds - video tutorial
Post by: afina on January 15, 2012, 03:28:05 PM
Hi!
I made 2 pairs, but then decided it was boring to show the same thing 4 times so edited it. But I left the the bit where I cut the glass to show that you need a longer piece if you use a thinner stinger. Too obvious, it seems. Sorry.

Louise I ordered mine on the 5th too, they are in my account history as shipped (edit looked again and it says shipped on the 9th) and I'm not worrying.

Post is probably having a go slow again, my normal post is taking a couple of days more than it normally would at the moment.

Mine arrived today - thank you

Just one question, I bought the clips but wonder if I have the right ones because the post wobbles around and doesnt feel secure at all. If I have the right ones should it clip in and stay rigid or am I being a wimp? Would a pin vice be more secure?

Hx
Title: Re: lampworked earstuds - video tutorial
Post by: JKC on January 18, 2012, 10:05:31 PM
I found mine wobbles too, so got a pin vice, but it got too hot.  Had a cunning plan, now put pins in pin protector, which holds it securely, then put that in rod holder, when finished remove with pliers.  Janet

Post by: Blue Box Studio on January 18, 2012, 11:16:12 PM
Ah, the wobbles.  Yes I had that too.  Then ran out of time so will have another go when I get back next week.
Title: Re: lampworked earstuds - video tutorial
Post by: afina on January 19, 2012, 05:33:57 AM
Yes, it slightly wobbles with my croc clips, too, but I quickly got used to that and after the 3rd pair that was no problem. I prefer the clips to a pin vice, because I can get the studs out of them while they are still hot and so can reuse the clips for the next pair immediately.

Wobbly pins is the problem I'm suffering from too - glad its not just me that has that affliction  ;D

Can I be really thick though and ask what you mean by 'pin protectors' Janet?

The little bottom parts of hat pins, they are small metal things with rubber or cork.

the earring back is also an option, poke the post into the back and grip the back with the clip might not be as good as the protector but I'm too impatient to wait till I get some!

Good idea, have you made any that way yet? any pics?  I have a few people wearing mine including me, as i normally use silver.  I have had no irritation from them at all, which is great. Janet

Why didn't I think of that! My pins wobbled about a bit too but I still managed to get a nice even shape. I love them and they are real instant gratiufication - out of the kiln and into the ears  ;D

So do you unclip the croc clip from the mandrel and just lay the earring   on the floor of the kiln ?
And what size should the clips be please, is it one from these, this was Julies link but I don't know what size.

Hi! I undo the studs from the clip, not the clip from the mandrel, and just lay the earrings on the kilnfloor. Don't put the clips in the kiln, because they will not withstand the heat very long.
As for the size: Mine look very much like the smallest they have in the ebay shop you quoted. (2 x 5amp Crocodile clips, Length = 5cm, Jaw length = 1.5cm)

I asked my hubby to solder the crocodile clips to the mandrel. He managed one but the other one wouldn't stick. I went to use the one he managed to do only to find he had managed to solder the clip together!  ::)

I have a solution to the wobbly pin syndrome.

Tried using the backs but because of the way the teeth are in the clip they don't sit straight.
Got out the dremmel and carefully filed out a little groove in the front pointed tooth.

result post sits in the groove and the V of the downward tooth, great grip, straight post and no wobbles.

Hope i'm not asking the obvious....but after watching the video a couple of times, can anyone tell me what the 2 bits of thick stringer were for?  they weren't used, was it just an alternative to the glass bits?

I must be the last person in the known beading universe to have read this link.

Lisa...having now watched the video, the lady meant that if you only have large/thick rods of your chosen colour, to just pull a very thick stringer with it and use that for the earring.

Hi everybody!
A very ingenious lady in Germany came up with a very good idea against the wobblieness:
Use lustre terminals, remove the plastic, screw one end on a mandrel and insert the stud in the other end. Screw tight.
Here is a picture to show how she did it.

I tried this, and it works like a charm!

Just discovered this thread and was wondering - now you bunch have had chance to play, did you get firescaling on these and how did you clean it off? Does the steel stay nice and shiny? I tried this last year with some copper wire and got reasonable results but it was difficult to clean the copper up. Also the "guinea pig" friend that I asked to try them did get a bit of irritation with the copper. These sound perfect but I thought I would check this out before I go spending yet again (My OH has already found me some clips!) Can't wait!

Hi! Yes, you get firescaling. The steel turns blueish blackish - like a new mandrel when you stick it in the flame for the first time. I don't clean it off. If a customer asks, I explain that it is not dirt but only a reaction to the heat used.
As for irritation: I had only 1 customer so far who got irritation - but she can only wear platium, not even gold. All the others who always had irritations even with silver can wear them without problems.

I forgot to add it to this thread specifically: one solution for wobbliness is to use a double-ended pin vice (can get them on eBay). Stick a bit of mandrel in one end to make it a comfortable length to hold, put your earring post in the other and have a damp cloth ready to loosen the chuck and let the earstud fall out at the end. I use my little marble mould as a handy handled device for slinging the earstud into the kiln, cos it's too fiddly to try undoing it directly into there  :)

Hey Everyone, this is my first time commenting on a post.
Basically I have been making studs on the end of a narrow mandrel and then removing once cool and glueing, sadly, the glue doesn't always seem to stick. Is this technique a lot more reliable I.e. glass to stainless steel studs?
Thanks!

Definitely: just make sure your first wrap onto the metal is of a decent thickness, and they aren't going anywhere!

Brilliant, thankyou.
I just wanted to check, I am only buying the 50 pairs of studs and the cost is coming to around 18.50 euros.
For anyone else ordering from the UK, is that the amount they paid?

Lantana, do you have a household polishing paste for ceramic glass cooktops? Because that is what Dr. Beckmanns is for. If so I would give it a try.

Hi Janet!
We will inquire into it. If it is possible, then it will surely take some time as we just bought a new lot and have to earn the money for the new order first ;-)
What length would you like?
